I am 40 and will be 41 in three weeks. I have always had regular periods. My last two periods kind of started off lighter than normal. This month I am only seeing blood on my toilet paper and very little on my pad. I am on my 4th day and it has not really kicked in just the light blood. I normally am a fairly heavy bleeder so its kind of worrying me. Over the past few months I have had what I think may be hot flashes. They were not daily just every now and then would feel flushed and have to step outside for a few minutes to cool down. My mother passed in 2003 and we had never discussed when she started her menopause. My sister was like 45 when she started menopause.Does this sound like the start of menopause or something else ? Also wanted to add that other than the bleeding my normal period symptoms were normal this month.

It is possible that you've begun peri-menopause. Sisters don't necessarily start at the same time. My sister began to get symptoms at around age 40. I was 46 before I started to get any. My sister gets a period only every 4-6 months, I still get mine every month without fail.

I would check with your gyn to make sure nothing else is causing the cessation of periods but your symptoms certainly sound peri related.

Thank you Wizard, so much for the reply. I called my sister tonight and she thinks she was more like 41 or 42 when she begun perimenopause. My bleeding increased some tonight but, this is still much lighter than normal. Just tonight I was so hot that I had to turn the AC on for awhile and my daughter told me I had for sure begun perimenopause. If my next period is irregular I will go see my gyn. I am not as worried so much anymore.
