Hi Donna-Sue: I don't have any major advise for you because although I have IBS, I have the diarrhea type. You were told to try Fiber-Sure, which is what I was going to tell you. Personally, I have found the Orange sugar free Metamucil to work quite well to regulate you as much as possible. I have also tried Librex without any luck.

If things aren't working, give Metamucil a try and see if it helps. I assume you're going to a GI doctor? If not, get an appointment ASAP. Also, I have serious pain with mine too, and I have to take Methadone for my pain. I have it all the time.

The doctor is correct that you need to get on a daily fiber supplement to avoid getting this bad again. But I would also take a gentle laxative of some type to help get the ball rolling so to speak for the next day or two. Maybe some Milk of Magnesia or some Magnesium Citrate could help you become comfortable sooner than it would take the fiber alone to start working. Again, just for the first day or two, just to get you going, after that fiber is your friend!

There is also a new yogurt by Dannon called Activia that has greatly improved my symptoms. It has a variety of probiotic bacteria in it that helps restore normal bowel function. I have one with my breakfast each day and I really feel like its been incredibly useful for me!

A word or two about fiber. There are basically two types of fiber products, those that are made from psyllium (a wheat husk) and those that are made from cellulose (a wood or paper fiber-there are a few different names for these, but they all say "cellulose" somewhere in the active ingredient with methylcellulose being the most common type I believe). At first glance, the psyllium sounds better since it sounds more natural. After all, who wants to eat wood, right? But, many people will get better results from the cellulose products. The reason why is because the normal bacteria we all have in our gut can partially digest the psyllium fiber. In doing so, the bacteria produces gas that can increase your discomfort! The cellulose products can not be digested by your gut bacteria, and so no gas and no increase in discomfort is seen. So read the labels and choose a cellulose product (Citrucel is the most common example of this type but there are many others now too). The other thing to know is that when starting out, many people seem to get better results from the powders that are mixed with water. Go ahead and use a generous heaping spoonful or two mixed well with water and then drink it down. As long as you are using a cellulose product don't worry about taking too much. Psyllium products need to be tapered up slowly in dose though, again because of the the gas problem. Once you are doing better, you can play around some with some of the newer tablets or powders that can be mixed into a larger variety of foods, but the good old fashioned water mixed powder is best for starting out.

Good Luck to you! I hope you are feeling better soon, and if you are not please seek additional care from your clinic or your pharmacist! Your pharmacist can point out other products that can be of help to you too.

Relax - I have colitis (similat to IBS) and have not had any symptoms since last April 2006 when I stopped the medication. The doctors said I have to be on medication for the rest of my life.I have been doing beathing exercises(Yoga pranayam) since October 2005.
The body can control and fight any health condition - it just needs help, and that help is extra breathing to create extra fighter cells in the blood. This is the simple best free control/cure you will come across and it has worked.
The Yoga Pranayam (breathing exercises) are:

Bhastrika - Take a long deep breath into the lungs(chest not tummy) via the nose and then completely breathe out through the nose.Duration upto 5 minutes daily.

Kapalbhati -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for upto 20 minutes twice a day.(Max 60 min/day) Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.

Anulom Vilom - Deep Breath-in through left nostril keeping right nostril closed
then - Breath-out through right nostril keeping left nostril closed
then -Deep Breath-in through right nostril keeping left nostril closed
then - Breath-out through left nostril keeping right nostril closed
and repeat this cycle for upto 20 minutes twice a day(maximum 60 min/day).

Tips : Breathe into lungs not into stomach. Do not hurry. Do it slowly. Rest whenever needed (in any pranayam). Can be done in sitting position, standing or lying in bed(if bed-bound).Keep tissues handy, as a lot of mucous from lungs will be coming through the nose.Try and do pranayam before meals.
How does it work:
Pranayam is about getting more oxygen into the lungs and sending it around the body via blood to aid in body repair. With extra oxygen more platelets and red blood cells are formed to build up the immune system.Extra fat is burned to reduce weight. All this happens naturally without side-effects.People with all types of ailments including incurable ones will benefit. This has been practised by sages, but has been simplified and brought to the masses by Ramdev.

Tell the medical advisor that you are doing pranayam and also tell others. Only by trying you will discover the benefits and then tell others via this board.

Hi Donna,

I have been in that sort of pain as well. My naturalpath advised me of a way to ease the pain and relax the muscles it is a castor oil pack. You need a bottle of castor oil, a good size piece of flannel a heating pad and a towel.

Soak the Flannel in the castor oil then heat in the micorwave quickly
Lay the flannel cloth on your stomach put the towel on top of it
Then the heating pad on top of that
Just lay down and do not do anything for 45 minutes (read a book)

Try that a couple times a day!

Good luck

Hi Fibro...You asked about the use of Metamucil with IBS. Yes, fiber just tends to regulate you and make you more "normal" whether you have either type of IBS. I have the diarrhea type and it tends to slow down the bowel (as does the pain meds I have to take for it) and make me more regular. In other words, I wouldn't worry about it , the Metamucil works for both.

ask your doctor about magnesium citrate if its ok for pregnancy but it is safe for toddlers and adults it works. my daughter has a picky problem and its cheese milk and crackers cheerios anything salty. needless to say weve had to use all sorts of things to help move things along.

Metamucil works for both. It is to balance the stools, not to hard, not too
soft. When I was first diagnosed w/ IBS 25 yrs ago, the doc told me to
take Metamucil 3 x a day. I went from constipation to loose stools, called
him and he said "just keep taking it", you will eventually have normal stools
and he was right. Been taking it for 25 yrs. The fiber is important. IBS
is caused by spasms (the way I understand it), it's like a hose that gets
a kink in it. So you have to keep it packed (fiber) so keep it from kinking
which is like our intestines, they get a kink, and you have pain and things
either speed up for some people or slow down. Now I did find out (at least)
with me that eating high fiber like bran etc, made me worse, I don't know
if that is from possibly an allergic reaction or what, I just stick with the
Metamucil and whatever other fiber I get, I get! I think you can overdo it
too.
