I have a 23 month old little girl with Cerebral Palsy and ever since she turned 15 months she has started having full body seizures when she is sick. She is on trileptal- 5 mils 2x a day and keppra- 1mil 2x a day. Even though we keep increasing her meds she still has seizures every time she gets sick. She will go a couple months sometimes without them and then get an ear infection and have upwards of 30 a day, most lasting 2-4 minutes. I don't know how to make decisions on treatment because I don't know if we should keep adding meds if she doesn't need them all the time and it doesn't really appear that they work anyways. Is it common to have more seizures when sick and what do you do during that time? Her neuro has given us diastat to be given rectally for when she has more than 6 seizures in an hour and it stops them temporarily but knocks her out for hours and when she wakes up she has them once again. I'm at a complete loss and any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My doctor told me that when I have a fever, I should take extra meds because a fever causes your metabolism to speed up, and as a result, your body processes meds quicker. So your medication levels will drop.

Teryn,
I would ask about other possible medication mangement options, or even perhaps getting a second opinon on your baby's situation by another neruo to see what can be done for her for the best possible outcome. Always voice your concerns with the doctor, its okay to question them and to see what other options might help. Be sure to get to know all side effects of meds as well so that you can get to know if it something you want to try for her or to know when to stop if she is having a bad reaction to them. Good luck to you both and many blessings, keep us posted.

Agree that sickness and/or fever can lower seizure threshold, and make more seizures likely.....also think getting another idea of a medication routine would be a good idea.
