I have had several family members die from various types of cancer, I've had an aunt die from from ovarian cancer, and now my mother has it. I have been told I should get checked, but do I wait until symptoms start to show, or keep going to the doctor. I do not want to seem like a hypo or something. I am afraid of knowing to a point, but I do not want to end up like my mother and them not find it until it is to late either. Please any advice would be greatly appreciated. Tky:)

Yes, you should be speaking with a doctor and letting him/her know your family history. I'm not sure there is any testing that can be done, however, if a doctor is aware of your family history, he/she is likely to be more diligent with exams and not as likely to brush you off if you begin having symptoms. Is there any way you can go to an appointment with your mom and both of you can speak to her doctor about this? Be an advocate for your own health. If a doctor dismisses your concerns (even after knowing your family history), find another doctor.

I agree with Karen. You should talk to your doctor about your family history.

I have ovarian cancer and they have talked to me about getting genetic testing for my daughter. I would also wonder if they would want to do a CA-125 blood test on you once in a while. Sometimes that number will be higher when you have Ovarian cancer. And watch for the signs.

Good luck
