If you think your child has ADD or ADHA and yet nothing seem to be helping there may be another problem. Many children are diagnosed with ADD/HD when in fact they have High Functioning Autism. I don't want to give you any wrong information because I am not an expert nor do I know a lot about HFA. So if anyone has any questions about HFA I would check out the Autism board on this site.

IME ... ADD is much more common than HFA.

The majority of kids with HFA or Aspergers or PDD-NOS have attentional difficulties. BUT the majority of kids with ADD do not have autism.

However, it never hurts to question. My DS's first dx was ADD ... after numerous atypical drug responses, and further testing, it was found that he fit the spectrum profile much better than the purely ADD profile.

There are other things that masquerade as ADD: thyroid problems, nutritional deficiencies, allergies (histamine binds to neurotransmitter sites in the brain). Physical problems can result in attention deficit. In those cases, the cause deserves attention.
