Hi there,
I have to have a brain MRI next week and I'm pretty sure I have to remove my belly button ring for it. The problem is, I have had it since 1999 and I cannot get it out. It is a hoop with a black ball and the ball turns but the ring does not budge. I've tried everything to get it out and nothing works, it's like it's permanently welded together. I know a friend of mine used wire cutters or something, but I can't find small enough wire cutters and I'm afraid to do that anyway. If anyone has any advice, I would be so grateful! I got this on vacation and there are no tattoo parlors near me, otherwise I would just go there and ask them to take it out for me.

Hi,
Have you tried taking it out after a bath or shower? My thinking is maybe the skin will be softer and yield easier to allow the ring to come out. You might call and find out for sure this has to be taken out, although I'd think if it's becoming a problem you might want to take it out anyways. If all else fails, I would suggest calling your doctor and seeing what he or she recommends.
Good luck,
Sara

Do you mean it's like a captive bead style? If so, I had one like that in my cartilage when I first got it and it was tough to get out.. it's too hard to open the metal part, but you have to try to pop the bead out.. but sometimes they are too tight to do that. If you have nail clippers handy you can use two (one on either side of the bead) and gently stretch the ring a little looser and the ball should be able to pop out. Either that or the nail clippers may even be able to cut the metal.. but it will probably mess up the clippers! I hope this is what you mean by what the problem is.. good luck! Mine is just a barbell but when I first got it threw screwed the little balls on it so tight I could barely even get that one off!

Are you sure you have to have it removed? If they are only imageing your head area you may not have to.

Try going to a piercing place for removal. My lady will change them, remove them, etc. They can also give you a plastic bar that you can put in so it doesn't close up. Hope this helps.

Thanks to all of you! The little ball is screwed in too tight so I will try all these things and hope for the best!

Good luck.. if it's the one the piercer originally put in, they usually put those on very tight just to make sure it won't come out!! If you buy a new one it should be a lot easier to remove but should still stay on just fine.

That's a good idea about getting a plastic kind to wear if you don't want it to close up. Even Walmart sells them in the jewelry area for under $10.
