I've had paramedics irritated with whomever I was with when I had a seizure and they were called out. They said because I am a diagnosed epileptic, I should simply take my Ativan (drug for stopping a seizure immediately) and then go to the hospital "if and when needed" on my own time via my own transportation. However, despite their aggravation, they've always taken me then and there.

Has your son been diagnosed with a seizure disorder officially? If so, I could see their reluctance. If not, there shouldn't have been a question as to rush him to the hospital IMMEDIATELY.

Either way, I would definitely think that there should be some kind of paperwork for you to have signed, whether he was taken or not. If not for any other reason, but liability on their part! You know how nuts things are these days with lawsuits being filed left and right. The paperwork would've been to cover their own you-know-whats.

I would start asking questions at the hospital, the city or private ambulance company, your doctors, etc. Just to assure there is an understanding as to when to call and when not to, and your rights.

Hope this helps.

My son was diagnoised as having tonic clonic seizures..the paramedics were lovely people(makes a change). As the worst part of the seizure was over by the time they arrived no treatment was needed. It was just that a friend said i should have signed a form or be given one and maybe had a copy to give to gp or something like that.Phoned up nhs direct and they didnt even know. You think it should have been a refused treatment form then?.It is just worrying me a bit.

Hi
I am from the UK. I believe that you only have to fill out the form if you are refusing to go to hospital when the paramedics have recomended that you should go.
I have had paramedis come to me after seizures on many occasions and not gone to hospital and the only times that I have filled out a form is when I have decided not to go to hospital when the paramedics felt that I should do so. I believe this is to cover themselves.
If the paramedics feel that I have got over the seizure ok and have someone with me then I have never had to fill out a form.

Personally I think that everytime they should have you sign a form.

Hope that this helps and makes sence
(sorry for spelling mistakes) xxx

They were irritated because it's official-you have Epilepsy-so they can't be bothered just because you had a seizure?! Oh that ticks me off!!!! And Ativan doesn't stop a seizure immediately. I've taken it before in an attempt to stop my Simple Partials from becoming Complex and it hasn't worked. The only time an ambulance has been called for me was when I had my Grand Mal--and that happened in my PCP's exam room and he called the EMTs. So they weren't about to get mad at a doctor! (plus we didn't know I had Epi. then.)

Anyway, as for not having to sign a release form after your son's seizure: I'm surprised the paramedics didn't cover their hiney's and have you sign on the dotted line! After my mom was in a minor car accident involving another vehicle, an ambulance arrived but she refused treatment. (she had cut her lip badly on the steering wheel.) They made her sign a "Refusal to transport" form before she could leave the scene. (she ended up having a friend take her to the hospy for stitches afterward.)

I called after a nasty GM before and took them a while to get here. They glanced over me and said I looked ok, if I need to go in, to CALL A CAB. I was fuming. I told them that THEY will be driving me to Urgent Care. They tried to avoid it by threatening me with "You'll have to pay for the cost of transport" line. I said fine, and was brought in.

Good thing I was. My levels (medication) were low, and the On calls said It was very good that I came in. I told them they should tell that to the EMT's. They asked me why I said that, I told them exactly what happened after I had dialed the emergency number on the telephone and THEY were very upset to hear that I was advised to call a cab and not the emergency medical transport.

As for medical forms, I've had to put my name on the waiver when refusing services once. When I tried to refuse another time they wouldn't let me and SHOVED me into the van then applied restraints. Needless to say I was upset that time.
