Lately i seem to be able to constantly feel my heart beating in my chest when im quiet and sitting down or laying down. There have been times when i wake up during the night and my heart seems to be beating so fast it scares. I dont have shortness or breath. I workout five days a week for at least fourty five minutes and have no chest pain or anything like that. COuld this be perimenopause symptoms. I have 52 and yet still get my period every single month.

dear wrmayslum,
I am 46 and I experience the awareness of my heartbeat when things are quiet. It seems to be beating hard. I also get a racing heart out of the blue. I believe that I am in perimenopause and perhaps you are also. Have you seen a doctor to rule out any health issues? It's a good idea. I have been to a cardio doc and have had all the tests. Palpitations are a symptom of perimenopause. It could be just that for you.

wr....I have the same thing from time to time and I'm in peri. My doctor perscriped Atenolol (Tenormin) 50mg for it. It's helped me alot. My girlfriend had the same thing, and her doctor also gave her this. I'd get checked out for sure, then ask about this med. Are you keeping track of your BP?

I've been having palpitations for around the last month although I am now post menopausal. I also find I only notice it when I am relaxing or trying to go to sleep. I exercise every day on my treadmill and fast walk about 5 miles a day in total and I do get chest pains lately which was why I went to see my doctor. He told me the palpitations are just my 'awareness' of my heart beating and nothing to worry about and that the pains I feel are muscular

I would get a second opinion on that.

I would get a second opinion on that.

I definitely agree. How about an ekg and a treadmill stress test?

Hello,

The pain with the racing heart prolly isnt the best symptom to
ignore 8-0
Id get to the real deal on why , Have you had blood work? Thyroid been checked?
When I get nervous, or excited, my heart has had moments it feels like its doing summersaults, if I feel it coming on. I quickly take my mind off my heart, we are not supposed to be aware of our heart, doing flip flops ,yeah right Doc!

Take care ~~

This can be totally peri and menopause related. If you feel comfortable that you and your Dr. have explored any other heart or health related issues, you should be okay. I've also had this problem for over 2 years. It came on with anxiety attacks out of nowhere. My heart pounded and raced for weeks. I finally went on bioidentical hormones and I'm feeling a lot better (I had many other symptoms-issues). I still get a racing heart on occasion (usually at night) and I know there is no amount of deep breathing that will help. It just usually passes and I try not to panic and focus on it. I exercise quite a bit also. I also take 400-500 mg of magnesium, which you might consider and talk to your Dr. about taking.

Katidid95 does magnesium help? I am 45 normally my heart beats around 60 when I am relaxed but lately it's in the high 80s and especially when I eat sweets ( I admit I got a sweettooth lately) it goes up to 91.. I just got an echochardiogram done in August and everything is fine. I am going to try and cut out the sweets for a few days and see what happens. I don't have shortnes of breath or anything and I don't think I have anxiety.. I used to but I pretty much have it under control now.
