For the past 3 yrs my headaches have been getting worse..I take 40mg of relpax and I take fieoricet....Well I got a ct scan today and I was suprised how short this was..I was in there I would say 2 min worth of scan time she stopped the scan came in the room and fulled around with the machine told me to be very still and I would say I had about another 5 min worth of scanning.....I thought it would atleast take 20 to 30 min....I guess everything is so advanced it doesn't take that long...Also, I suppose if she had seen anything it would of taken longer....My mom and grandmother both died from aneurysems(sp) in the same spot of the brain and I wanted to make sure I didn't have one....I also have been getting this tingling feeling in the same spot of my brain for about a year now...It feels like a million bugs crawling in one spot, yuck...It doesn't happen often maybe only like every 3months...Anyways, if anyone else has had a short ct scan let me know...Tks, Ralinda

I had one last saturday. Yeah mine was only like 5 minutes, in and out, not too bad. Came back clear too :). Unfortunately, I have to wait until tomorrowwhen I see my neurologist to find out the cause of my headaches.

CT Scans usually don't take very long. You were no exception.

CT scans are usualy performed

1. because the patient expects/demands one

2. For legal rather than medical reasons

A CT scan is very short, as you say, modern equipment can complete a thorough scan in 5 minutes.

Have you seen a physical therapist about your headaches?

Fioracet is a strange cocktail, a low dose of acetaminophen, a low dose of caffeine, and a barbiturate with no known analgesic activity.

You may do better with a specific medication, for example an analgesic plus a triptain if it is migraine like, or an analgesic plus a muscle relaxant if it is "tension type" headache.

A combination of 2 Advil PLUS 2 percogesic can be suprisingly effective.

Did they do the CT scan because you asked for it? Did they do it because you wanted to know if you had an anuersym? Did they use the contrast dyes?
How were your mom and grandmothers anuresyms found?
I had a CT scan that lasted no more than 5 minutes.

I asked for the ct scan because of the family history and it was without contrast....my grandmother died instantly and my mother had been sick for about a week with some dbl vision and just very sick with a BAD headache, well they thought maybe a viral like meningitis and was going in for a spinal tap on that monday...Well I found her dead on Sunday morning..Long story short it was some type of berry anuersym and it had been leaking that is why she had the dbl vision and the continious headache and it just reputured and she died instantly...So they both had no clue.....Ralinda

Did they say the CT scan would detect an unruptured anuresym?

I have been so worried because I had a CT scan and they said all was fine but now I am hearing that it can not detect an unruptured anuresym unless they use the dyes.

I stand to be corrected, but I dont think brain anurisms are heeditary.... I dont think you have any more chance of suffering one than any other person, so you can relax.

If a double contrast CT scan (or even a cerebal angiogram) would help put your mind at rest, discuss it with your doctor.

As for the headaches, you have a right to adequate releif of your symptoms, regardles of what the CT scans show.

A daily dose of amitriptyline would be good starting point, and for accute attacks, higher doses of ibuprofen (600-800mg) would be a good starting point. The effect can be boosted by a sedating antihistamine (eg, diphenhydramine/Benadryl, 25-50mg) taken with tha analgesic

Thanks for the info, My 3 brothers and 2 sisters were all told to get a mri at one time just to rule anything out..Everyone else had there's but me...Some doctors will tell you they are heridatary and some will not, so who knows. I just wanted to know for my own mind.Headaches run in our family as well as my 7 yr old has been suffering with them since age 3..We just are unlucky, the girls that is,and have not had a good makeup and we are prone to headaches...As to you ABC they told me the machines are much better now and they can detect one even with out dye, so who knows....I am happy and relieved my scan was okay....Thanks, ralinda

If headaches run in your family, then you are especialy a candidate for using amitriptyline or nortriptyline as a preventative (nortriptyline produces fewer side effects)

Start off with 25mg at night, and slowly build up to 75mg... it may totaly turn your life around!

A ct scan may detect something is abnormal ( it did in mine ) but ut also stated needed MRI..I didn't ask for one,,,went to E R with a thunderbolt headache..MRI detected the aneurysm..then had the angiogram the next morning...And yes, aneurysm are from hereditary..More and more docters are saying this..If you have more than 2 in your family..they would want all family checked....I had 1 and wanted all my siblings checked...thank god everyone was fine..but me...The best test besides a 4 vessel angiogram, is a MRA,,this test just checks the arteries in a 3-d fashion..A very good test for aneurysm..or a CTA...would be fine also...Hugs, Cindy
