Well I think I've found another miracle otc supplement that drs fail to tell you about unless you ask. People with or without heart problems might want to look into taking fish oil capsules as an added benefit. I wont go into details about the benefits of it..but they're easily found on the internet. I have been taking them for about a week now and I asked my cardiologist about them and he said of course I should take them. Why not tell me this earlier??? lol anyway...other than shiny skin and a fear of cats the fish oil seems to be good for me!!;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

well I personally dont think I have been on them long enough to notice any immediate results, but I am hoping the benefits in the long run will be fantastic. I urged my husband to start taking them as a preventitive. I do like what the internet says about them as well as dr's I know recommending them. And its true what they say, that in europe they give them to patients who have suffered a heart attack. Why not here? I dont think the US concentrates enough on natural healing with natural sources than they do on prescription meds, which we soon discover alot of them hurt us more than they heal us.:p

I take 1200 mg of fish oil per day. I was diagnosed with hypertension this summer and was put on an initial dose of 12.5 mg HCTZ. My Systolic was over 160 and the doctor and I assumed that the dose would need to be adjusted or another RX added to control the BP.

As it turns out, I took the HCTZ, lowered my salt intake by reading labels more carefully (you'd be shocked how much salt is in breakfast cereal, bread products, salad dressings, etc.), and taking the 1200mg fish oil.

My follow up visit one month later showed my BP to be 128/72! I was more than pleased.

My doctor said fish oil MAY be helpful for BP and for cholestrol control, but not to take excessive amounts because it also makes your blood less sticky and if you are on aspirin or anti-coagulants, it can be too much. He thought the 1200mg was about right but told me not to go higher.

I think that amount is pretty safe and as long as you don't go overboard, its worth a try. I know fish oil is very popular in Europe; almost everyone takes it I've heard.

Ugh now I get to be confused all over again. I am in fact on plavix and aspirin but yet the dr still told me to take fish oil. Sigh. now I dont have any idea what effect thats going to have.

I have two self-eluding implants and my cardio-doc didn't suggest fish oil, he virtually prescribed it. I take two of the horse-pill sized capsules daily along with my 10/40 Vitorin. Doc sez the fish-oil idea came out of heart studies in Japan and Norway.... places where fishy stuff is eaten regularly and heart problems are less prevalent. The studies showed a significant higher level of good-guy cholesterol.
.
I began the regimen about 2 years and three stress-tests ago and my results have been quite good.
.
Of course I watch my diet too and exercise regularly.

What kind of fish oil do you take? Are you still taking Plavix? If you are not taking it anymore, how long after your stents were placed did you stop it? I assume that you at least take an aspirin daily. Thanks

I take aspirin and fish oil with no problems.

As I stated, I let my doctor know what I was taking and he said it was fine, just don't go overboard. Let's face it, some people think if one tablet of fish oil is good for you, then 6 tablets must be 6 times as good!

I think moderate doses of fish oil are OK with aspirin but always check with your doctor, to be safe.

And yes, my HDL went from 51 to 68 since I started fish oil, so it may help that too.

I take 5 grams of fish oil per day...enough to yield a gram of DHA + EPA. I also take 650 mg. aspirin per day. For cholesterol I take 20 mg. Lipitor and 500mg. slow release niacin.

I stopped Plavix 6 weeks after my stent.

For BP I take 40 mg. Lasix and 50 mg. Cozaar to get modest control.

Dietary control is calorie counting and fairly tight control on saturated fats (could be a LOT TIGHTER!)

Plus my vitamins!

My stent (Cypher sirolimus eluting) had its second birthday last week.

I work out very hard but enjoy my Pizza too. I let the Lipitor worry about the cheese and the Lasix worry about the salt. :D:D

My brother when 3 yrs old diagnosed with heart murmur. Dr told my mum to give him a lot of scott emulsion. He said fish oil can help the heart valves closed properly. It did. My brother now 40 years old without any heart problem.

My children were given fish oil when baby age. It used to bring up like that way. Grow cannot without fish oil and honey!

So which is better? Cod liver oil in the bottle like they used to have back in the old days or the big horse pill capsules that they have today?

Pika,

I too took Scott's Emulsion regularly as a kid...I liked the taste. I think it was recommended by the then sitting president, Thomas Jefferson!
:jester:

PWarbur,

I take either the liquid cod liver oil (12 ounce bottle...1 tsp. a day) OR 4 of the horse pills of fish oil as long as I get the gram of DHA + EPA. Usually the bottled liquid is the better deal dollarwise, but occasionally Target has a 2 for 1 of big bottles of the pills that come out SLIGHTLY cheaper.
Pills are less messy to take.

Cod liver oil has large amounts of Vitamin A and D. Regular fish oil capsules usually do not.

Because these are fat soluble vitamins, A and D can build up in your system. If you take the cod liver oil, you need to be aware that you may ingest excessive A and D. That's why I stick with the capsules of generic fish oil; I get plenty of A and D elsewhere in my diet.

I had my self-eluting stents implanted a bit over two years ago. The major problem was a totally blocked left anterior descending and a 90% blocked right coronary. Fortunately I had multiple collaterals volunteering some help around both obstructions.
.
I use the local supermarket brand, 1000 mg Omega-3 fish oil, two per day. And, yes, I take a baby aspirin (cherry flavor) every day too.
.
My only continuing med is Vitorin 10/40. Diet and exercise helped my bad cholesterol a lot but not enough to suit my heart doc and I was unwilling to put up with the bruising I got from Plavix.
