My dad has congestive heart failure and lately he has had a lot of trouble breathing. The doctors said he has fluid in his lungs and they gave him medication to take, but for the past few weeks none of it has really helped, although there have been days where he had been fine and others not so fine.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced fluid in the lungs and breathing problems, and if you know of any treatments other than taking prescribed drugs? Are there any natural treatments that he can add to his current drug treatment? How long will it take for him to drain the fluid out?

I was in ICU for several days for CHF. It seems the focus is to provide oxygen...the system with drug therapy provides relief from the excess fluids in emergency situations.

I was given oxygen with a nasal tube for a better oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange and improve the degree of balance that is monitored outside the ICU room (I remember the nurse rushed to me when a tube was out). Sometimes when the edema is very severe and there is an emergency situation of low oxygen, a tube can be placed down the throat.

Diuretic medication for edema and medication for better heart functionality and reduced afterload for the heart is the protocol.

When my Mom's lungs filled with fluid, she had to go to the ER, where she was also given oxygen and lasix by IV. She takes Lasix twice a day now to control the fluid. Her cardiologist is a CHF specialist and there is a nurse there who administers Lasix IV to those who need it.

He has been put into a rehab facility to regain his strength, but he still feels like he has trouble breathing.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

My Mom also takes Spiriva (a puffer) to help with her breathing (she had lung function tests). What does your Dad take for the fluid?

I believe my dad takes lasix and they told him to cut the salt from his food.
