I need help with a symptom. I had something happen today that was very strange. I was just finished eating breakfast and out of the blue I started feeling very shaky and dizzy like my blood sugar dropped but I had just eaten. (mostly protein) This has never happened to me before. Has anyone else experienced this before. My legs were shaky and I felt faint and weak. It really worried me. I have had a fasting blood test and thyroid checked a couple of months ago and they were fine. Can't explain this. It really scared me. This lasted for about 20 minutes. Anyone have this happen? Thanks!

hi roland. i had something similar happen about 4 times over the last few years, it was like someone pulled a plug and all my energy drained away. someone i worked with at the time said she found this fatigue one of the worst things to deal with, it would just wipe her out and happened fairly regularly. i never took it any further, and just used to sit down for half an hour, by which time i was ok again. if you're worried though, maybe worth a word with your doctor again. i haven't had it happen in a while now, but think i'm maybe through the worst of all this, not having had a period for almost a year, and believe the worst symptoms happen while the hormones are wildly fluctuating.

I have had the same thing happen to me throughout the day but its pretty much on a daily basis. Freaks me out sometimes. I can be fine one minute and then feel dizzy or lightheaded the next. I was walking with my honey through Target yesterday and had the weirdest sensation of like I had been heavily drinking. I was woozy and feeling like I could basically fall down or just not walk straight. I need more energy..this is getting ridiculous. Plus not to mention that I haven't slept good lately...waking up all hours of the night either being too hot or too cold. Just doesn't seem to be a happy medium..lol.

Can you let us know how you get on? As I too have had similar symptons, feeling dizzy and faint, but mine have only lasted for a few minutes so I just put it down to getting up to quickly. But know I'm begining to realise its prob happened quite a few times now.

Also whats the purpose of a fasting blood test, never heard of it?

a fasting blood test is a way of testing for diabetes. a sudden drop in blood sugar is potentially dangerous for someone with diabetes so i guess they need to rule it out when someone suffers from sudden crashing lack of energy.

Roland - can you let us know how you get on with your doctor please. The exact same thing has been happening me for a few years, sometimes can be on a daily basis - it wipes me out. I am 49 years. I have mentioned this to my doctor several times but get no definate answers from her. I feel for you as it is so frightening when this happens. I believe it must be all part of menopausal years but I sure would love it my doctor would confirm this. It still scares the heck out of me and I should be used to them by now........the only thing is I am still alive to tell you this

If anybody else has these symptoms please share with us.......and has your doctor said it is all part of peri/menopause.

ps I would love to know if anybody has been having these symptoms for several years?

Hi I am 38 years old, no kids still have my period that I get every 22 days (not sure if that is normal). I have similar situation where hubby and I went to breakfast and all of a sudden I felt the heat come on behind my neck, my hands and feet so sweaty – I felt like I was going to faint. Right before the holidays we went to the mall and it hit me after 30 minutes of being in the mall that I had to leave; I felt like a drunk trying to walk because I was dizzy. It seems like its happening everyday now.

I am currently going to the doctors which he has no clue as to what is going on with me. I had blood test for thyroid, diabetic, cholesterol etc., 24 hour urine test and all came back OK. I am now going for more blood test. If this is peri I really do not wish this on anyone!!! Right about now I feel like a total Freak!

Hi everyone,
When I see my doc I will post what I find out. It sounds like maybe I won't find an answer for my symptom either. I am feeling the same thing right now. I ate lunch about an hour ago and I now feel shaky and weak like my blood sugar is dropping. I don't get it! I hate peri! I also wish that we would get some kind of acknowlegement from the medical profession that these things are really happening to us and aren't just our imagination! By the way, my fasting blood test consisted of not eating for 12 hours, getting my blood taken, then eating a meal and coming back to docs 1 1/2 hours later to get it checked again. I guess that tells how I react after I have eaten also. It was normal! (of course!) Here's to better days for us all! T.

Hello everyone,
I have had the hardest time describing in words, adequately, how I am feeling. So anytime anyone else writes about anything similar, I like to respond to see if it's similar...it helps when I go to the doctor to see how everyone else describes this....I also just wrote down everything and hand it to the doctor when i go...a list of descriptive symptoms....
9/05, I was in a restaurant with 4 girlfriends when i felt like I "short circuited" as if a light switch was being turned off in slow motion, I was nauseaus, light headed, kind of dizzy but NOT in the usual "spinning" way. I went to the emerg room--they thought low blood sugar etc...but all tests came back normal...since then i have had every test--heart, thyroid, MRI etc...
so the conclusion is (peri)menopause...my periods were normal at the time
I am 51 now, I have since had hot flashes for a few months and my period has been quarterly for the past 3 cycles.
Since that original incident, I have never felt 100% and at times, though only a few , have felt as bad as that day.
I have pressure and buzzing in my head--I can't get comfortable when my head is on a pillow at night.
I do take numerous vitamin supplements and tried many of the suggestions here on this board and read many of the books suggested but I dont notice much difference with any consistency. I waver between acceptance of the (peri) menopause diagnosis and worry at times if it could still be something else.
so, thank you all for covering this similar topic...

Marci - I can so relate to what you are saying. My first experience of these symptoms seem to have been just like yours.....in a restraunt with hubby, my mom and boys, happy out and all of a sudden this 'zap' through my head......didn't know what was happening and felt so scared. I felt awful for the remainder of the day, felt a little better that night but next day I still felt 'drained' from the episode......think it was because I wondered was it a stroke or what. Again, like you even tho it didn't always happen on a regular basis I just did not feel 'well' at all. I must admit I do have some good days but it's always hanging there in the background (or in my mind, wondering when it will happen again:yawn: ) I don't get hot flashes that often and only go thru phases of night sweats. All this has been happening (well the zaps, dizzy, lighheadedness, weak legs etc. has been happening since 1996 - I hope it is near the end:) I still get my periods pretty regular but have had peiords of 3 months between on a few occasions in the last couple of years.
It is so good to have these boards that we can share our problems with each other......I always feel better when I read similar symptoms to mine.....Thank you all so much for sharing:wave:

It is good to have someone who believes that your symptoms are real and not just imagined. I am 46 and have been going through these things for three years. I would really love not to have the worry in the back of my mind that I have some terrible disease or illness. It's hard not to be anxious when you never know what each day is going to bring. We women really need places like this to come and feel like we are not losing our minds. Maybe one day medical science will take us seriously. T.

Hello Again!...especially to "alwaysaworrier"---I wanted to say when I read your post...and you used "zap" and "stroke"--that is exactly how i felt!!!
I cannot believe you have been going through this for 10 years...
I really feel like I have altered what I do on a daily basis because of this overall unwell feeling and these weird losing my balance feelings...as i mentioned i did have hot flashes for a few months---those are gone (although people say they very well may come back)--honestly compared to the way I feel on a daily basis---I would welcome them being my only symptom!!!..as much as I read and still read, I was totally unprepared for feeling this abnormal.
PLEASE keep posting if you have similar symptoms that dont go by the book!--it has been SOOOOOOOO helpful...

I can relate! I expected hot flashes at 49, but what I got was dizzy-lightheaded-weirdness. One morning last year, I got up to make lunch for the kids and just got dizzy and felt like everything had been pulled out from under me. Also I felt twitchy in my upper body and slightly zappy in my head. The doc checked everything-- I am in great health actually. I worried I have MS or Parkinsons. Doctors assure me it just doesn't present like this. It was especially bad though for about a month. I fixed diet, take very good vitamins and oils, take anti-anxiety drug Buspar and small amounts of Ativan. I also went on the new BC pill, YAZ. So overall, I'm better, but I still have some dizzy-weird-twitchy days, especially mid-cycle. I'm 99 percent sure this is all hormonal. Thanks for the "feeling strange" thread!

I can get low blood sugar after I have eaten especialy if the food was all protein and no carbs as the protein does not put your blood sugar up at all so if you were borderline low blood sugar before you ate and it dropped just that little bit futher then wham hypo.

Your blood sugar is also more sensitive during hormonal change as in lead up to and menopause. If you fasting blood sugar was okay recently then its ulikely you have diabetes.

My aunt had awful time with feeling faint when she was going through the menopause, she assumed it was a variation of the hot flush as she went all hot as well.

Gavi,
It may be that my blood sugar dropped because of mostly protein. I get this mostly mid cycle. Hormones may be the culprit in this where my blood sugar doesn't even out at this time of my cycle. T

Hello. I'm 44 years old and about 2 years ago I started experiences the same kinds of feelings...weak, shaky, muscles trembling, strange feeling in my head, like not being grounded. I had it two or three times over a span of about 6 months. It was frightening enough that I remembered the episodes after months had gone by. In between I would get a racing heart for no reason, dizzy spells and sweating. I went to the doc (I was only 42 at the time) and he tested me for several things, menopause not being one because he said I was too young.
All the tests came back negative.
I have suffered from panic attacks since my early twenties so he said that was probably what was wrong and they had just changed. Well, about 6 months ago I had another episode and I have been having a lot of "fuzzy brain" times. I can only describe it as having cobwebs in my head: my brain felt weird and scary. I would feel disconnected and shaky. My pulse would pound, my arms and legs felt rubbery and I would be sweating but cold. The brain part was the worst. I felt like I was going insane. I would cry and yell, not believing it was panic attacks.
I had recently moved, so I found a new doctor and gave him a list of about 12 symptoms. He immediately checked my hormones and I was right in the middle of menopaus!
It doesn't matter how old you are, if your body runs out of eggs it's time! I have done extensive research now about this often ignored change in women's bodies and it's really surprising what happens to us. It's more than just "hot flashes" and not wanting sex.

It was very comforting to know that I'm not crazy or dying from somthing terrible. My husband and I sat together at the computer and read all the stuff and he was amazed. He said he finally understood what I was going through. It's been a great help.
I also have hypoglycemia but when I feel like this it's sometimes right after eating so I check my bood sugar and it's ALWAYS in the normal range.
So if you are over 30 and experiencing these things, please make your doctor check for menopause, no matter what he says about your age!

KodasMom, your symptoms sound like a lot like what I am going through and have been through all kinds of test and put on anxiety medication which does not work. I go to the Endocrinologist on April 2nd (next available appointment that I could get) but I am just wondering what do doctors give you or anyone who knows to make this go away or do I have to live with this passing out unstable feeling forever? My internal doctor said it’s not perimenopause because I still get my periods and called to tell me that my blood test was normal. My FSH is 13.5 & LH is 6.3. My body is so hot (behind my neck, hands that perspire, feet and face area). I just cannot stand it, I feel like a freak.

Kodasmom, What are you doing now for your symptoms? I would like to go to an endo doc. I don't think that my gyn doc would suggest it though. I think she would say that I have to just go through peri. I get the fuzzy headed feeling too, like I'm not there and my body is not mine. I also get times where I feel like my hands don't want to work. It's really strange. I really hate the anxiety and the shaky feelings the most though. I hope they all go away after menopause! T.

Hi:

I'm curious as to why your doctor told you your blood tests were normal and not entering the perimenopausal stage. An FSH of anything over 10 is normally considered to be indicative of a diminishing egg supply. Once there are few or no eggs to ovulate, menopause is close behind.

Yeah I am not sure why is said it was normal. Probably because he is old fashion "man doctor" and does not believe I am at perimenopause because I still have my period. I just think he is not very informed on this subject and is sending me to an endocrinologist which I will bring a copy of my blood work of everything he has checked for. I insisted that he check my FSH levels which he did not want to do but to make me happy he did. On the lab work itself it said FSH level 13.5 than next to that it said “normal” which maybe that is what he read but I don’t think it would print out “menopause on it”. Every time I went to his office my hands were perspiring and he would check my temperature which would be slightly high which I could have kicked him because if his body felt as hot as mine he would be in the same situation. Yes, doing research I have read the same of anything being over 10 so I am really glad I had the test done but now I need something to help me and not sure what they give for this. April 2nd seems like a long time to wait but I am trying to hang on……

Hi Spencer:

Have you tried the over the counter options for the moment? I'm currently using fish oils, B Stress complement, magnesium and natural progesterone cream. I was having a terrible time with anxiety, tingling and numbness in my hands and feet, exhaustion, nausea, dizziness, headaches. My life was miserable and my doctor told me I had no options but to ride it all out since I have a history of blood clots and can't take HRT or the pill. I started searching, read Dr Lee's book and Ann Gittlemans book and decided to try some of their suggestions. The fish oils and magnesium really helped but the thing that took away most of the problems in my case was the progesterone cream. It's not for everyone mind you but can't hurt to try it all if the doctors won't help.

What a blessing to hear your stories! You think you're the only one experiencing these things until you read this website. I have had the dizzy episodes, blood pressure spikes, "zaps" in my head, "stroke" feelings. etc. Doctor has found nothing through blood tests, scans, etc. - all normal. I have always suspected perimenopause (I am 47).

Thank you Thank you Thank you

I am not going crazy!!! I too was having the dizzyness, nausea and thought for sure my dr was wrong when he suspected peri......just waiting for blood tests to confirm it. That is the worst part, feel like I have no control over my body, and wonder if I will pass out in public or vomit on someones shoes. The dr put me on estradot 50 til he gets the results back this week, but I really don't feel any better..........he said it would work in a day or two, was he just stringin me along? From these posts, seems like it might be a bit longer or never!!! I am hypo so I am very careful about what other meds or herbal stuff a person wants to take as it can throw my levels way off.
Any more suggestions would be great..........and I would just like to say that if I barely eat due to nausea, then why do I still feel like my middle is getting bigger?

I just joined the boards . . . I have sooo enjoyed reading what other women are going through. I have all the symptoms, anxiety, hot flashes, dizzy spells, numbness in hands, feet, face etc. Five years ago I thought I had a nervous breakdown. My husband and I were building a house, my dad and father-in-law had died of cancer and stroke, I had 2 teens and a 5 year old and I thought I was dying of pancreatic cancer. I was in and out of hospital, had my gall bladder removed, just a mess. This all seemed so weird because for 20 plus years I have been so "together", handled everything and more. In fact I am a counselor/therapist at a state university (25 years now), and handled many problems for many people. Then I am a mess, how can this be? Now I am understanding better. It's menopause. I have gone 3 years without a period (except last March, hormones kicked in and had no hot flashes etc. and another period). I thought about HRT and in fact took Prem-pro for three weeks, lowest dosage every other day. Felt great emotionally, like renewed energy, NO hot flashes, but started feeling bloated and like I was putting on weight and got a yeast infection, so went off, waiting to see how I will feel. The best thing in 2007 has been discovering this board and reading I am not alone. Thanks sisters!

Hi,

I’m new to this board & these symptoms. I’m 46 & have had irregular periods for about 2 years. This is the longest though – I haven’t had a period since Dec. In reading everyone’s comment I have many of the same symptoms (anxiety, acne, low energy, just not feeling well, nausea, leg cramps). Except I haven’t had hot flashes but instead COLD FLASHES which have started at night and wiped me out. I went to the doctor and she said it was probably a mild virus but it happened again 2 weeks later. My legs shake uncontrollably & I can’t get warm. I feel like I have a fever but I don’t. I keep feeling like I’m coming down with something but I don’t. Anyone else have cold flashes?

Thanks

How often do you get these "flu like" symptoms? The first two were a couple weeks apart but this week it's been like everyother night. I fell very anxious too.

The longest I had was about 3 days in a row, so thats why I thought it was the flu, then it happened about 5 days later again, this time I did a bit more research and found out this is normal here. Knock on wood, I've had 2 good days now, so hoping for 3..keep your fingers crossed. The anxiety only seems to come when I feel lousy and didn't know what the problem was, but now that I do maybe it will make a difference in my anxiety next time it hits. What I am finding is I seem to have gained a little in the tummy area, and it seems that most of my food sits under my rib cage, acid reflux alot lately too, always feel uncomfortable and have to eat really small meals. I should be able to knock the pounds off, but thats not the case. I still get worrried going to the gym that I will have one of these spells!! I feel enabled some days and that I am in a suspended state of my life. This really does suck somedays.

Update on my doctors appt. My cardio doc has gone through my symptoms and has said that my symptoms may be due to blood pressure changes that I may be experiencing. I tend to have low blood pressure, 115/64 is my average. Not sure if this is really low or not. He has put me on Fludrocortisone which he said will help my kidneys retain more salt. I guess I will be swelling up a bit. I am going to give this a try. I hope the weird feelings that I posted about here go away. I will let you know. T.

Oh my gosh, this is such a great thread. I have felt all of these symptoms for 3 years. In the past two years I have only had 4 periods and I'm only 45 years old. The last one was 4 months ago. The hot flashes seem to be subsiding somewhat. I have been taking natural vitamin E and fish oil. For three days last week I did not have any symptons and had lots of energy, I was so happy to feel normal again, and then they started back up again. Hot flashes, foggy brain, fatigue, waking up in the middle of the night, anxiety, internal shaking, rapid heart beat, terrible indigestion, bloating and gas, ughh! Does this ever end? What is natural progesteran cream and where do you buy it? Which symptons does it help with. And what about bio identical hormones, has anyone tried those?

I need help with a symptom. I had something happen today that was very strange. I was just finished eating breakfast and out of the blue I started feeling very shaky and dizzy like my blood sugar dropped but I had just eaten. (mostly protein) This has never happened to me before. Has anyone else experienced this before. My legs were shaky and I felt faint and weak. It really worried me. I have had a fasting blood test and thyroid checked a couple of months ago and they were fine. Can't explain this. It really scared me. This lasted for about 20 minutes. Anyone have this happen? Thanks!

Yes - I am feeling dizzy as I write this. Been going through the weakness and off balanced feeling. Been to my primary doc 3 times in 2 weeks. Pretty sure I'm peimenopausal. I'm 44 and my periods are slowing down. hope this helps.

Spencer,
Don't feel too bad. I also have been to the endocronologist and had blood work and he said that I am not in menopause. My FSH was 6.0. My symptoms are terrible. I wish that the doctors would have a better way of tracking our hormones. You get one blood test and that's all they do. If our hormones fluctuate so much, why can't they develop a test that is capable of catching these changes? I hope that you feel better soon.

It does get better ladies. I'm 60 and went through all of this. Once in a while now it comes back again but milder all the time. The first part of the ride is terrifying. Like every one else here, I looked at every remedy from health alternatives to doctors. A few times the symptoms felt so terrifying that I ended up in the emergency room. Lots of tests from toes and up were run, brain scans, cancer scans, heart scans, blood.... I spent a lot of time finding out that the 'symptoms' were actually normal.

I didn't feel normal because all the years after puberty were what I'd finally thought of as normal. But then, I only accepted puberty 'symptoms' as being normal after I learned they were yet when they started, I just knew something was wrong with me then too.

I guess in the end, the best way to hand some of these is to just 'surrender' to a natural process. BUT before you determine what you're feeling is natural, you should always see your doctor first even if it means a lot of tests will be run! Believe me, I was glad I did and VERY glad they all came back saying 'A healthy older female!'

I feel beautiful again, even if crispy around the edges once in a while!

wahaaay btoons, good for you. i'm sure being a relatively new, and totally spoiled bride provides you with all the seratonin to need to feel good ALL the time!
on a more serious note, i think you talk a lot of sense regarding accepting these symptoms as 'normal', and riding the wave of it. i think of it as the other end of puberty, with all the spots and hissy fits that brought with it. there's no way hormones are going to arrive, or disappear, without making a fuss is there?

I had this very thing happen to me several times many years ago. I was in my early 30s and I also thought at first it was my blood sugar. My mother was a diabetic and I'd had a couple of low blood sugar attacks so I knew exactly what those felt like. I thought it was just another sugar attack although I'd eaten right during the day but after sipping on some orange juice, I'd still feel the same, like my sugar was low but I don't think it was or the oj should have helped. It would usually last for about 15 to 20 minutes. I then thought maybe my blood pressure was bottoming out; it's always run rather low and I thought maybe that was the problem. But it only happened a few times over a year or so and it's never happened to me again. I never mentioned it to my doctor (that was real smart) and never found out what it was. That's not much help, is it? I just felt the need to respond because I've never heard anyone else describing that exact same feeling the way you did.

Shadows,
I am still getting the feelings. I do hope that they will go away with time. They make me very anxious! Thanks for your post! T.
