View Full Version : What happens during a seizure?

I was once prescribed Ativan for sleep. I ran out and didn't get a chance to refill it right away, so the medicine was stopped abruptly. (Nobody told me that that was risking.) To make a long story short, my parents found me on the floor w/ my eyes wide open and no response. And, it happened again a couple of days later when I was driving on the highway, going about 80mph. Let's just say, by some miracle, I walked away w/o a scratch and my car somehow ended up just inches off the highway, back-end first. I was unresponsive and have no recollection of someone getting in my car and trying to wake me up.

My question is, what exactly happenes in your brain when you have a seizure? What makes you unaware and temporarily lose your memory?

I'll never have one again, I hope. It was just these 2 times a few years ago from the Ativan. I don't know anything about seizures. Could someone please fill me in? http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks!

Hi Megan,

There can be several things that trigger a seizure. Stopping a med can do it.

As far as what's going on in the brain...

A change in the electrical currents in the brain. This can be either a surpression of normal neurotransmitters or an unexpected surge of the neurotransmittes.

I've explained it to my daughter as the brain being your computer. During a thunderstorm you might lose "power" to your system in a couple of different ways. You could have a power outage that stops the current and it goes down or you may take a lightening strike causing a surge of power to run thru it crashing your system. Either way you're going to have to reboot.

Hope this helps. Talk to your Dr. and be well.

Love and light
