I have a 15 years old sister who continuously combs her hair back too tight in hair styles that give her a headache. I was helping her blow dry her hair the other day and noticed that she had a few bald spots and spots where her hair looked lighter on the front of her head. I told her that she needs to stop pulling her hair too tight because all of her hair in the front of her head is going to disappear! Well she doesn’t believe me and she thinks she has lost hair due to her using gel in the past.
I believe that she is destroying her hair by pulling it too much. And maybe the gel was also apart of this… She read somewhere that combing your hair in tight hairdo’s will make it grow longer. Has anyone else heard about this because I hadn’t since she told me.
I think that she has pulled her hair so much that it hasn’t grown back in some places. Is there anything like a product or something that actually works that she can use to get her hair to grow back??

It is my understanding that wearing a tight ponytail will cause you to lose your hair. Think it is due to damaging the hair folicles.

Wearing hair pulled tight will not cause hair to grow longer. It is your overall health, and nutrition that will make a difference. Gentle treatment is needed to protect the hair a person has.

This very true. She will also cause some damage to her hair follicles if she sleeps with her hair up as well.
The gel will not/should not cause her hair to fall out. The combination of pulling the hair back and gelling it to death cause the hair to harden and with cause it to break and fall out. Tell her that loosening the pony tails will help the headaches go away and will help her from losing more hair. I know alot of girls who are dancers that do the same and have the same hair problems.
Good Luck!!

Is there any way that she can have her hair to grow back (product or w/e)?

I think with time it will grow back on its own.. if she stops wearing the super tight ponytails. The only products I hear about for hair regrowth is Rogaine and I believe they make it for females too.

For making hair grow faster, your can give yourself a scalp massage. I heard this can stimulate hair growth but I'm sure it isn't anything EXTREMELY noticeable and takes time. Also just taking good vitamins and taking care of your hair and trimming it regularly.

There's always Rogaine if it gets really bad on her.

Yes, hair has to be treated gently. If you pluck a hair you don't destroy the root but it won't grow back quite as healthily I've heard. Is kind of the same principle, I guess.

Rogaine only works for men and women who suffer from Male pattern baldness. It will not treat hair fallout from disease or destructive mistreatment. If the hair follicle isn't destroyed, you might suggest multivitimins designed for improving hair.

I think that she has destroyed her hair follicles because she has been combing her hair like this for years and it hasn't grown back. Does anyone know of any product that can make her hair grow back?

Hi guys, well I have done alot of research on hair products and I found out that there are no products for it besides a hair transplant  . It's called Traction Alopecia. The hairloss can be prevented if the person stops immediately from causing alot of tension on hair. But since my sis has been doing this for a while I don't think it wil grow back. Hopefully though some grows back from recently lost hair. No more tight ponytails for her! It also says that you can have permanent hair loss from pulling your hair alot while your blowdrying and curling it.

That's very true any damage to the hair follicle will cause hair loss. Hopefully she'll just start loosening up those hair styles. It will help greatly with the migraines?headaches as well.

Not long ago I saw this thing on the Tyra show where she was talking about beauty. Than she has a mother and a daugther come on and talk about how they overtweeze their eyebrows so much that the hair doesn't grow back normal at all. I guess the eyebrows started getting patchy... and to solve their issue one of the beauty experts applied Rogaine to the spot and told them to use it till the hair grows back.

So I bet if she did try Rogaine it may work... though I'd just wait for it to grow back if I were in her place.

I'm not sure if Rogaine would help on hair that has fallen out due to being pulled. Hair that is pulled back in a tight ponytail probably becomes weak and falls out by itself after taking so much of the tighting. I don't know if its the same as plucking yor eyebrows. .
