Hi all! I have been reading the boards here for the past couple of days and I have to say I have got tons of info!!! I am having bunion surgery this upcoming Friday. I believe I am having the Austin/Akins Bunionectomy. Has anyone had this? Can you tell me your experience? Also I am wondering if anybody can tell me what to expect going into this. Like what happened when you checked in at the place you had surgery. Like what did they do to get you ready? I am just really nervous! Thanks all!

Hi Jonsgirl - I went to an ambulatory surgical (same day) place. I was told to bring loose leg pants so I went with wide leg sweat pants and they worked great. I couldn't eat or drink from midnight the night before and I had to be there 1 1/2 hours before surgery. They had me put on a hospital gown and then scrubbed my foot with antispectic and put an IV in my arm. Went over all the paperwork. I saw the surgeon before the procedure, I went to sleep and woke up 2 hours later. Of course someone had to drive me. I also was told to keep my foot elevated on the way home.

Most important is take the pain medication as prescribed. You have to keep ahead of the pain once it sets in it is harder to control. I was also given a nerve block during the procedure that took about 8 hours to wear off so I didn't feel anything. It really is not as bad as it sounds. I actually expected more pain and was really surprised at how little I had. Also important is keep your feet elevated and iced for at least the first 48 hours.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Mary
