View Full Version : How do I catch my Doctors ear?

I really need a fresh approach.
I see my ear doctor again this week, but I'm afraid it will probably be of no use. I don't have any new way to describe my horrific pain; so all he'll just say is that he doesn't see anything wrong except old scare tissue. I've already been given the standard injections, diets, and medications; all of no avail. I really need some useful ideas to give the doctor in order to get my point across to him that I really am in pain and need more than another checkup in three months.
I have a lot of other major medical problems that I am also dealing with (mostly heart), but I really need help with the ear pain because it seems like the ear pain and the accelerating headaches that stem from the ear are keeping me from thinking clearly, therefor it disables me beyond what I can cope with.

I have chronic deep ear pain that is so bad it accelerates into neuralgia pain in my face and constant migraines. It is very hard to think or communicate well with that much pain, plus it also keeps me nauseous all the time. I am 56 and I have had bad ears all my life: constant ear infections, malformed eustachian tubes from cleft pallet, mastoid surgeries, cholesteatomas removed, and inner ear disease.
I've been dealing with the continuous ear pain since 1984; along with horrible tinnitus. All different kinds of tinnitus; including several different high pitched tones at once, a roaring that sounds like a plane engine in my living room (including the vibration), I also always hear my pulse, and sometimes I get a high pitched noise so loud that it is painful It sounds like it is real.

Any ideas to reach the empathy of my doctor?

could your sx be from damage to the nerve that controls the stapedial and or tensor tympani muscle? the vibrations could be spasms of these 2 muscles, myoclonus can also cause pain.

lib,
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I do think it could be from damaged nerves, but when I ask the doctor if it could be from damaged nerves, he always says he's never heard of such a thing. I don't know what myoclonus is, but will check it out.
Again thanks,
enie

PS:
I guess I should have said in my first post that I hear very little out of that ear and it is slowly deteriorate. I think some of the hearing problem might be due to the extreme tinnitus. I am slowly losing hearing in my right also.

Enie, you did an excellent job writing a description of what you are enduring, why not print it and let him read it? He can also retain it with your records. Doctors have a tendency to hurry through patients and end up not listening as well as they should resulting in further patient suffering.

Also, try not to let him hurry you out of the office. Let him know you would like more definitive answers or at the very least, a good plan. If that doesn't work, perhaps finding another doctor would be the answer.

Definitely hope you receive resolution ... sounds as though you've gone through alot. Good luck to you! :)

Enie, i totally relate to you. I am 33, have severe tinnitus and now also suffer from chronic pain 24/7 in my ears. Recently, this has driven me to the edge. i am also searching for solutions but so far i have had no progress. I find painkillers dont help it.
I only found your post because i did a google search on " continous ear pain".
Sometimes, i have been thinking i can be the ONLY person in the world with this affliction given that i never see posts on continous pain. God, give us strength.
I also feel like a crazy person going to doctors and all my family think i am suffering from " depression"....very frustrating

Hello RickAstley,
That's me alright – ear pain and noise 24/7. Sorry to hear that you are having the same. It took many many years befor I could get a diagnosis. Five years ago a Neurologist explained to me that it wasn’t the ear that was causing the pain, but that I had two types of neuralgia.
Look up Geniculate Neuralgia. It causes severe pain deep in the ear, which can also spread to the ear canal, outer ear, mastoid area or eye. It also occurs in combination with trigeminal or glossopharyngeal neuralgia.
Last year my Neurologist prescribed Lyrica and for the first time since it started I had found a medication that really helped the pain. But then because of my serious heart problems, I am not able to take it any longer. (It caused fluid around my heart - Bummer !)
Lyrica was really helpful with the pain, (not the noise though). Maybe your Neurologist can check it out for you. It is not easy to diagnosis.
Severe pain with no help can cause depression, but don't let them put the cart befor the horse and tell you that the depression caused the pain. Keeping your act together despite the constant brush offs of your symptoms is really important.
