Hi,
I am 50 and have not had my period since April 2006 so I guess this is it....menopause. I do not take anything in the form of hormones and my gyny does not seem to think I need anything. What do you guys think?
Thanks,
Adrienne

 ...... it's mainly your and your dr's choice........ I would try without them at first. Then if you need to try hrt or bio-identical go ahead .....Some of us just try to deal with each symptom as they come up...... I try to keep away from harmones :dizzy: ...... Let us know what you decide upon...... Good luck... Dee

hi adrienne. i'd have to agree with dee, it's up to you and your doctor really. i'm at a similar stage to you, in that i'm 54 and my last period was end of jan/beginning of feb 2006, so almost 12 months period-free now.
i took a decision very early on that i wouldn't take any hormones during this time and see how i went on. i've had just about all the symptoms to a greater or lesser extent, and the only things i have taken are the supplements recommended for us ladies at this time in our lives, which i believe have helped hugely.
my thoughts are that i've got this far without hormones, so see no reason to now take any. and that, with any luck, now that i'm within a whisker of being 'officially' in menopause, things will continue to improve the way they have done in recent months. hope this is of some help.

Hi!
What supplements are you referring to specifically because I don't take anything and maybe I should be......
Thanks,
Adrienne

hi adrienne. if you check out the natural solutions thread at the top of this board, you'll see that ladies here take a number of different things to help some of the symptoms.
i take an all-in-one thing, specially for menopausal women, which contains lots of different things, but the main things seem to be calacium, magnesium, borage oil (similar to evening primrose oil), flax seed oil and fish oil. i feel it's important to take something like this for at least 3 months, for it to get properly into your system, and for you to notice any difference. i've been taking it since about april last year and i'm going to continue with it for another few years yet, maybe longer. i don't think supplements are things that make you wake up one day and think 'my goodness, i feel better'. it's a more gradual process, so that looking back you may remember how bad things were, and how much better they are now - if you see what i mean!
also, what works for one may not necessarily work another. good luck.

Hi Adrienne---same here. i was in peri for about 5 years with very few symptoms. just the irregular periods and occassional hot flashes. had my last perion on March 11, 2004. Got my last hot flash about 2 months ago so it was 2 full years until the hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia etc stopped for me. i am one of the lucky ones. get an occassional bad night but far and few between. tried HRT once because i couldn't stand sweating anymore and got a period 3 days later that lasted for a month. No thanks. It also for about 6 months made the night sweats worse. it was almost like starting all over again. For some it's great, for me it was horrible. Good luck.

hi icc. so you reckon maybe it takes a couple of years after your last period for it all to settle properly? i was wondering how it all goes after the periods have stopped for the required 'official' menopausal time. have you noticed anything else that's different/better/worse? i'm almost 12 months without a period and wonder what else i have to look forward to. thanks.

liverpool sue**** everyone is different but in my case almost exactly 3 years to the day of my last period all those nasty menopause symptoms went away. so it would be 2 years after i passed the full year without one. the only thing that hasn't left is my body has changed alot. alot of sagging going on that I never had. not alot of weight gain but alot of shifting of the weight. I do feel alot better without the irritation, hot flashes and the night sweats made me nuts for almost 5 years. luckily it's all gone in my case.

I havn't experienced hot flushes or sweats or any of the symptoms that menopause refers to ....yet. Maybe I will be lucky and not have them or they will still come.

Hi, my mom went through the medically induced change of life...meaning she had a hysterectomy. However, they did put her on HRT and during the time she was taking it every time she went off the estrogen to the progesterone she got severe migraine headaches for around 3 days. This went on for several months and she hadn't quite caught on to the cause until she noticed the pattern. Once she figured out what was causing it she decided to stop all HRT and hasn't had a migraine since then.
I am 50 as well and am in the peri stage. Last period I had was back in June. I have already decided that due to the risk factors involved with HRT that I have heard about and what my mom went through with the migraines I am not going to take the hormone replacement. Unless I go absolutely looney then I may consider it but not until then. lol

well. I am just amazed at all you lucky ladies with no menopausal symptoms.
I started with hot flashes BEFORE my periods stopped and started on HRT immediately. Twenty years of no sweating, never a headache, no itching , burning or spotting. Then I heard about how Dangerous HRT is (if taken with progestins which I rarely took). So, I stopped Premarin and sort of (obviously not gradually enough) stopped and bought some bioidentical hormone cream.
Worst month in years. INCREDIBLE, DEBILITATING itching , no sleep, lots of swelling that scared me. Heavy bleeding for over a week. Then someone said maybe you have a wittle weast infection?? hmm So I used a cream for 7 days, continued with the phytoestrogen cream and got well again with one
unfortunate exception: I still have some burning, and I think vag. atrophy.
I'm also dealing with minor depression but I DO have reasons for it. Doctors never tell you that Premarin keeps wrinkles away--but it does. It really does.
I'm 62 and could pass for 52. I mix the hormone (not HARMONE)cream with Pregnenolone cream--the mother of all hormones. And I use progesterone cream also: Emerita. It's really quite a bother; I'm used to just popping a Premarin at night. Now I cream myself to death. At least I have no hot flashes or night sweats if I have to think of something positive.
