Hi All,

I'm a 42 year old female and my doctor's office called today to refer me to a hematologist because the platelet count on my blood test last week was "a little high" -- it was 425. Is this abnormally high? Should I be really worried? I've never heard of high platelets before, so this is all completely new to me. Other than frequent headaches (which I've had for 15 years) and occassional lightheadedness, I don't believe I have any symptoms.

I should mention that I'm quite doctor-phobic, and having this physical was a huge deal for me...it was my first doctor visit in 8 years. Now I'm a bit freaked out at having to go to a specialist!

I appreciate any information or advice you can offer. Thanks! --Trisk

425 is not "very" abnormal.

That said, you might want to see the other blood counts as well on the CBC. Ask your Doctor's office for a copy of the results. There is enough info (sometimes more than necessary) on the internet and on this board for you to interpret the results yourself.

It would have been great if you had previous CBC results to check if this platelet count is normal for you - but you haven't visited a doctor in 8 yrs so i guess you will not have any past test results.
