I know it sounds odd but my 10 year old son swears he has an allergy to chicken. He will not eat it!! At first when he was younger, we made him eat it. But he actually shows signs of a reaction. His face gets red, throat gets tight, eyes water and gets nauseas.
has anyone heard of this?

I've never heard of it, but I'm sure there's a lot of stuff I've never heard of. Does he eat things with chicken in it at all? Like chicken noodle soup, chicken burritos, or a casserole with chicken in it? If he won't try foods with chicken in it, you can try to trick him by making him a hamburger with ground chicken instead of ground beef. If he eats it, and has no reaction, then the reaction he has when he knowingly eats chicken is brought on himself. Good luck!

A person can have an allergic reaction to any food. He can get tested (either blood test or skin test). My son has food allergies and I would be in a panic if he told me his throat was tightening. I wouldn't feed it to him until you find out for sure. In my experience, children will refuse things they are allergic to. They seem to sense it.

If you have fed it to him without his knowing it, and he has the same reaction, then it definately sounds like an allergy, and not something to mess around with. I only mentioned trying to feed it to him without his knowledge, because some kids will get themselves so worked up about eating something that you can't tell if they are faking. My cousin knew how to make himself vomit if he didn't want to eat something.

He can probably recognize the taste of the chicken, which could still lead him to freaking out about it. At what age were you making him eat chicken? Very young kids who are exposed to odd foods like that can sometimes develop allergies to said foods - that's why some people have reactions to weird things like shellfish and soy.
In any case, it's definitely a good idea to ask his doctor about this, just to see if the kid is being a big wussy about it or if he actually has an allergy. In any case, is it really a big deal that he won't eat chicken? Can he eat other poultry and not have a reaction?

now he claims turkey does the same thing. he can eat ham, beef and pork. i originaly associated this with the idea of him invisioning a chicken and then it being killed to eat. but he knows where beef comes from and has no problem with that.
i used to think he was being a wus and just trying to get out of eating it but his face looks horrible after he does. he totally gets red in face, throat tightens up and he feels sick to stomach.
i will for sure now, contact his doc. to see about it all!

i had a friend is college who was severely allergic to both chicken and eggs. he would get red in the face, get hives, and have trouble breathing if he ate chicken or anything that had chicken in it.
it's quite possible that your son has the same thing.
