I donated a kidney to my brother 15 years ago. I now suffer from high blood pressure and i am on medication for it. On my last hospital check up i was told my red blood cell mass is raised and they will probaly have to look into it.

I never asked what can cause this. So can anyone shed any light on this.?.

Most certainly, do have them look into it.
One possibility, though rare, is polycythemia rubra vera which should be treated promptly. Good luck.

Hi,I am guessing they were referring to mcv/mch lab test or possibly high hemoglobin levels, which is rare cases primary polycythemia which is treatable through giving blood on a regular basis but very doubtful it's primary.I dont know if you smoke, if you do it raises hemoglobin levels. How much water do you consume daily? In your case seeing you donated a kidney I'm not sure if your water intake would be the same but dehydration is the #1 cause of secondary polycythemia as well as in smokers which is an easy fix, primary is where the bone marrow is over producing red blood cells which is not good, clotting ect...If they are saying the cell mass it self is abnormal which is "normal" in some people but most of the time overlooked in lab work even if the value is high because the readings are not conclusive to diagnose a disease. Some peoples cells are a bit larger.I am sure you will have follow up bloodwork, if you smoke or drink alcohol cut back or quit and increase "water" intake,it should make a difference if they are speaking of elavated hemoglobin and will help the dr in his diagnosis by ruling out dehydration/smoking.Hope this helps a bit and best of luck, sure all will be fine
