View Full Version : What could this be?

My MIL has been sick all this week, it started on Monday, she got sick suddenly with a high fever and vomiting. She vomited throughout the night and went to the Dr Tuesday morning. He admitted her to the hospital b/c she was dehydrated. She has high WBC count and some wbc's in her urine that indicated a kidney infection (but the Dr said it could also show that in urine due to the dehydration) She continued having a high fever, they got it down to 102 with meds for a day or two and then it went down to 99 with meds, but went back up and stayed. She was vomiting whenever they forgot to give her the Phenegran. Fast forward to Sunday and another Dr came in and told her that her WBC count has went up even higher (sorry I don't have the exact number, just going by what FIL told me this morning) and she still has the fever, hovering anywhere from 100-102 with meds. She also has pain in her abdominal region, sides and under ribcage. I thought it could be from all the vomiting but she said she had it before she got sick. The Dr covering rounds today has ordered a sonogram of her stomach. I just wonder why this wasn't done before? Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what could be causing the WBC to stay high and the fever still be there. thanks!

High WBC and fever definitely indicate infection. I'm suprised the DR never ordered a abdominal scan asap. This could be a Kidney infection.....however a severe one or it could be something else to do with her tummy. Perhaps even a appendics. I haven't got first hand experience of appendis as I've never had one myself but I do know they cause fever, high WBC and abdominal pain and sometimes shooting leg pain. Good luck and keep us all posted x

Thank you for your reply! Her regular Dr came in today and said he thinks it's just a severe kidney infection since her other blood tests are coming back normal. She is currently waiting for them to come and get her for the abdominal scan. Her fever is still 102, but she feels alot better. She hasn't had any change in her urine-color,output or frequency, so this was a shock to her. Her Dr said it was bacterial and that she could've inhaled the germ and it took up residence in her kidneys, instead of it being an untreated UTI. I've never heard of anything like that before, but I'm no Dr :)
