I read on a TMJ site that TMJ cannot be cured unless bruxing is addressed. And that most appliances including splints do not address this problem. It however promoted this one device that basically trains by way of an alarm when you are clenching/grinding at night. And over time this device trains the way you sleep to eventually eliminate bruxing. Has anyone used a device like this and what were the results.

There is a product callled Grindalert. I think I need to get one.
The other night for the first time I was clenching so hard it woke me up. I had read about how much pressure we exert but to actualy feel it was extremely alarming - it was as though I was going to split a tooth in half.
I'm undergoing NM splint treatment and when I told the dentist he said it was most probably caused by premature contacts which he would rebalance at the next adjustment. But to be honest I am not sure, maybe bruxing is caused by stress. It looks like nobody knows for sure.
I can well believe the point Rass brings up that our TMjs can't recover if we continue this kind of nightly violence

Just a thought - but make sure you sleep in a flat position - preferrably on your back - but do not use more than one pillow to prop you up - it increases the tendency to clench or grind. If you are using more than one pillow b/c you feel like your head needs more support or your neck/jaws feel better when you are semi-prone - try using a cervical pillow - it will support the head and neck better which will allow the jaw to freely hang open a bit.
