Hi Mandy! I once had frozen shoulder. The pain is at its worst when you reach around to the back, as if to put your arm into a coat sleeve, or to reach for a bra hook. If I remember right - (not that I want to remember such pain as that!) - the pain was more at the front of the shoulder than anywhere else. Physical therapy helped cure mine.

Did you know that we hypothyroids are more prone to frozen shoulder than others? Yep. I'm not sure why, but it is true.

You may only have an impingment of the shoulder instead of it being frozen. From what I hear, if it is frozen you cannot move your arm away from your body, reach up etc.

I have impingment and still can move arm most directions, not comfortable, but can still move. Orthopedic doctor told me last week to do exercises to prevent the shoulders from actually freezing. Once frozen, it is not good news. He said to keep moving the arms, keeping the movement fluid and not locked up.

Check out exercises for strengthening the rotator cuffs.

Can you all please tell me which forum is the best to research FROZEN SHOULDER. My friend has this and I told her I would research this for her. There are so many forums on healthboards, I dont know where it would be.
Thanks.

Thank you all for your reply's

Hi midwest, It seem that just about everything go with thyroid problems!!

My mum when alive had a frozen shoulder and said to me its the worse pain ever!!
she had a injection, well in the end she needed three because the pain was so bad.

She also said the injection was well bad, my sister also have a frozen shoulder and the injection and her arm is a lot better.

Guess what we all have hypothyroidism.

I am a very scared to have the injection, the pain is so bad on trying to take my bra off and like you say putting on and taking of your coat. also if I stretch my arm out to the side, but all the pain is more in my arm than my shoulder, on Friday I stretch my arm out to shut the car door and it really hurt about two hours later my neck was so sore right in the middle, I went to
the doctors and he said I pulled ligaments.
As you know I have and still am having a lot of problems. i.e. pain under my ribs so I don't know what to think as gallbladder and arm, shoulder pain go together. Because I have no gallstones I don't seem to be getting far.

How long did your pain last and how did you cope did you have the injection.

anyway thanks and I do hope you are well...take care....Mandy

My mom had the frozen shoulder in her left shoulder. She waited until it was really bad and went to phyisical therapy for about one year. She eventually had to go to surgery. They did not make any incisions, but they literally tore the shoulder. It was called a manipulation. She then had physical therapy again, and then she was pain free after that.

The injection should help with the pain long enough for you to do physical therapy to build the muscles and unfreeze the shoulder. Both seeing it in the doctors office and being the patient, I can say that the injection has been a great relief to MOST people, some long term (like my self) and others only short term.

Yes Mandy, I took the steroid injection. It was in no way as uncomfortable as you would assume it to be. The idea of it sounds tortuous, but I don't remember much discomfort from it at all. I was in such agony from the condition itself, I'd almost have let the doctor take the arm off at that point!

The injection helped alleviate the pain, but didn't eliminate it. I would not have been able to do the physical therapy without it, though. The therapy was tough work, very painful, but I knew it had to be done. The problem was that after about a month's therapy, it didn't seem to be helping very much. Shoulder was still tight and painful. Finally, the doctor started talking about surgery to cut the bands of scar tissue. The mere mention of the word "surgery" panicked me. I was determined to loosen it up on my own, so I stood in the center of a wide open room and swung my arm windmill-fashion wildly around in as wide an arc as I could swing it. I felt a *pop*... and suddenly, the shoulder was moving free and with much less pain! I did essentially what the doctor would have done (as lisaaok described), but I did it without being put under with anesthesia.
I'm not advocating this do-it-yourself approach for everyone... am just relating my experience. The longer you wait to fix this, the worse it will get, so try to be brave and get on with it so you'll be feeling better soon!

Oh... and I also don't want to imply that everyone who gets frozen shoulders have hypoT... just that people with hypoT get more frozen shoulders than the general population. Aren't we lucky? ;)
