hey there,
tomarow morning, 1-25-06 i am have surgery to correct a congenital birth defect, (an umbilical hernia), and i have never been put "under" before. i'm kinda worried about it espicaly since i have really low blood presure and a low heart rate. i was wondering if any one had any advice for me so i can calm down and be more prepared. also what is a pain pump? i know i'm getting one but my sergon really didn't explain it that well. please give me any advice you have, thanks

Your surgeon and/or anesthegiologist will not allow surgery to begin unless you blood pressure and heart rate are stable...so, what I'm saying is, just because you have low BP and HR doesn't mean there is a problem in having surgery in general.

Two years ago, DH was scheduled for surgery and he came thisclose to having it cancelled because his BP was too high (MUCH too high). The anesthegioloist will administer medication to regulate your low BP, I promise you. No one is going to say, "well, let's take a chance..."

As to the pain pump, it is a device that is hooked up to your IV and, when you have the need, you press a button to give yourself a shot of pain killer.
