I have arthroscopy sugery scheduled on the 12th of Feb and I'm really nervous about it. They say I'll be out of work for 2 weeks. Anyone have any experiences they could share?

I was out one full week plus 2 days. It wasn't really all that bad for me. It helps to get small gel filled bags that you can freeze to put inside the jaw sling they give you. The little baggies that I came home from the hospital with leaked. I was able to stop the pain meds and just use Tylenol after the 5th day of post op. I didn't bruise too bad. The only thing I can tell you that is not a real positive thing to say about the surgery is it wasn't as successful as I had hoped. I still have some hinge like feelings and sometimes it still catches. However, a lot of my problem is my clenching habit.

I hope all goes well for you. Remember each surgeon is different and each persons tolerance and healing is different, so just because I didn't have a great success, doesn't mean that you won't do GREAT. Sending prayers your way. :-)

Thank you for the info. I hope my surgery will go well. Even if I still have some problems, I'll be happy to be able to eat normal food again, instead of practically liquids.

I did liquids for about 8-10 days then moved on to soft foods. The strawberry Ensure was really good. I still have problems eating some things. Like for instance, the other day I really wanted a hard salami sandwich. I ate it, but that lunch meat was hard to bite and chew. ARe you having arthoplasty on both sides or just one side?

I am only having it on the right side. The MRI showed it to have arthritis and degeneration of the joint. I'll have to try that ensure.

Oh and I forgot, I also got some cherry gobbler from a local restaurant. I love their cobbler and really wanted some so bad. I took it and put it in a little food chopper I have w/ a little applejuice. It was delicious!

I'm having a tooth pulled on Monday, so I'll be back to the liquids for a few days too.

just wondering how long you have had tmj and what caused it and how else you have treated it so far?

I had popping in my jaw for 10 years, then pain started about 4 months ago. I'm not sure what caused it. I've tried soft food diet, cold/heat therapy, and night guard. Now I am doing surgery.

I hope your surgery went well. I had bilateral arthroscopy/arthrocentesis in May 2005 and I was back to work in 4 days. I felt great after the first few days and the pain was far less than I had experienced in over a year. The results didn't last too long for me and I have some grinding noises now. I hope things went smoothly. Boost was my friend. I believe they advised no solid foods for 2 weeks and I tried to follow pretty closely.
