View Full Version : Biotin and excess hair growth?

I'm considering taking biotin to help my hair get healthier and make it grow out faster. I've taken it before for about five months straight (5mg) and it didn't do anything for me, it was like taking aspirin. However, at that time, I was taking three different medications that caused me hair loss. One of them even changed the texture of my hair, making it more dry than normal. I'm no longer on any medications and I want to try the biotin again and see what happens. But, I'm a little scared by what I've read here about it causing hair growth elsewhere. Does that really happen? That's the last thing I want being a female.

hi there, your currently taking 5mg? this isn't enough. I firtst bought biotin in 5mg but later i read on the interenet that to benefit your hair you can take up to almost 5000mg a day! i take 2000... it just says that it needs to be in high doses for it to work so that would probably be the reason why it didnt work. I've been taking it for a few week and have experienced no weird hair growth, i never even really thought about it, if anything happens i'll keep you updated .Good luck, Emily

Thank you for your reply, Emily. :) Actually, I'm not taking any at all currently. I wanted to get some feedback first about whether or not it caused unwanted hair growth. I though the highest dose was 5mg  (that's what the vitamin store where I bought it said). The brand/bottle that I took before (Country Life) said 5000mcg = 5mg on it.

My dermatologist from Cleveland Clinic recommended Biotin Forte 3mg with Zinc.

I take biotin myself and have for about 2 years now. i was taking 2000mcg of it once a day then increased to twice a day when i started noticing the hair grow. I am trying to get to 5000mg per day to really see a difference on top of my head. i see a little as far as thickness everywhere except for my problem area int he top crown part of my head, but i just started using nioxn and castor oil for that part to help thicken the hair folicles. When taking biotin it's best to drink alot of water with it. Biotin is also a metabolism booster. i lost 10 pounds the first month i started taking it. If you don't drink enough water with biotin you can get acne, headaches, and yes wiry hair or thicker in in different parts of your body. The hairs on my legs and arms now have to be shaved at least every other day b/c the hair grows back so quick and thick. Biotin will also grow your nails.

Thanks for the replies, curious and bunny. :) So, curious, is the reason you're getting the extra body hair because you don't drink enough water? If so, thank goodness I drink a lot of water! I already have a faint, very light moustache (inherited from my mother  ). It's so faint that others don't notice, but I know it's there. I definitely don't want it to be noticable, icky. :( Also, I'm 36 (37 in June), and I noticed that after I turned 35, my eyebrows got darker. It must hormonal, I'm guessing, because they've always been very light all my life to the point where I had to pencil them in. I get my hair dyed red so I've been considering getting my eyebrows tinted at a salon that I go to. That's not a problem, but the moustache, ick. I hope that I don't lose weight, as that's not my goal. I use Nioxin, too, good stuff. I have hairloss from a medication that I was taking. I just recently went off of it.

What is the dosage?

5000 mg or mcg? There is a big difference?

5000mcg (micrograms) = 5mg. I just bought 5mg today, I hope I don't get all hairy. :dizzy:

Is there a difference where you get it at? Let's say at Walmart vs. GNC?

Is it better to take a high potency one just one time a day or take lower doses 2 or 3 times a day?

Mine is a one daily, high potency one by Country Life. The employee at the vitamin store seemed to think that it was the best. I wouldn't think it would make a difference what brand you get or where you get it, though, as long as it's 5mg high potency. The price of mine was $11.99 for 60 capsules.

You can try it and see. I've heard that Biotin works good taken with other vitamins and minerals. The lady at the vitamin store seemed to think that 5mg (5000mcg) worked best if you're taking it by itself, though. I'll keep ya posted. :)

I found one at Target, it's called Hair, Skin, and Nails

It is 3000mcg and I got it for $7.99.

It has a lot of other vitamins like zinc, horsetail, calcium, etc.
