Ive had a rough couple of days as my 3 month old son was in the hospital with a cold virus for 5 days. While I was in the hospital the resident doctor informed me that Jason did not have a defined soft spot on the top of his head like he should. She said she would tell his primary care doctor and go from there. His pediatrician says that he is not worried about the soft spots. He says he's fine. But, you cant even feel the one on the top of his head. I just dont trust this doctor. I even went to the hospital on my own behalf, without his suggestion. He said to "give the baby a few more days" to get better. He couldnt even breathe. He needed nebulizer treatments and oxygen for 5 days. And im still giving him the treatments at home every 6 hours. And when i took jason in for a check up 2 days after he got home from the hospital, the doctor did not even check his temperature and weigh him! I just think that is ridiculous, but I dont know. Being a new, young mom, I never even thought to check on the soft spots on his head. I dont know if they were there at birth or not. On top of that, he's always been very sensitive to touch, and he didnt like his head being rubbed. So, i never noticed it. Does anyone know anything about this? I am in the process of finding him a new pediatrician. But, should I wait and see what the new doctor says or take him to a specialist? I really think my son's health is at risk with this doctor, but i dont know much about this soft spot stuff. He has the one in the back of his head, but the one on top is barely defined, if at all. Does anybody have any suggestions or any information on this? Thanks

I would get this checked as soon as possible. I don't want to scare you but there is a condition where the top of the skull can fuse together too quickly(it is realy not supposed to fully close until almost 2 years (I think). If it closes too soon the brain does not have room to grow. I had to take my son for an xray of the head at about 18 months to have this checked(he was ok)
This is not something a doctor should dismiss. My sons doc sent him for the xray immediatley. (he had what seemed like a ridge on top of his head) Good luck to you. My son is now 4 and I have learned to not let them dismiss anything I find out of the ordinary. You are his mother and you know him better than anyone always go with your instincts. I know when my son is not himself and sometimes you have to fight for an answer. Here is an example- when my son was 2 he developed hives. I brought him to the doc and they sent him to allergist(had no allergies) told to give him antihistamine and wait it out as hives are not an illness. well I kept telling them he was sick, he got to the point where he would tremble when he tried to climb or exert himself , he was getting so weak. Finally spoke to a nurse who said have him checked for strep; well they didnot want to do it. he did not have typical symptoms, red sore throat, fever etc. I brought him in anyway and told them I was not leaving without a blood test for strep they did a rapid test in office and it was negative, I stilldemanded the bloodwork and guess what? POSSITIVE! Go with your instincts.

i totally agree here with the above poster.this "could' be an issue.demand,yes.you DO have that right,to have your child evaluated by a pediatric neurologist or neurosurgeon.if he is still in the hospital this would not be all that difficult for them to to this for you.your ped doc sounds like one you DO most definitely need to drop as well.i am glad to hear you are looking for a new one.there really are some very good and some great peds out there.this current one sounds rather clueless at best about neuro issues and just basic normal growth of an infant.seriously,if a resident can pick up on this,well,you know.

given the fact that he actually appears to have the head sensitivity and an aversion to touch could indicate some sort of nerve involvement,like an overstimulation when the sensory nerves are stimulated?this DOES need further evaluation,and you would be well within your rights to demand an eval,espescially given what that resident told you.i am rather suprised that this resident didn't reccomend this himself after telling you that.you DO have rights as a mom just concerned about your child.believe me,i went thru hell and back with my son and many many hospital stays.do not let yourself be intimidated by any doc ever.they ARE only docs(who are capable of mistakes just like the rest of us humans) after all,not gods gift to the medical world.i wish you lots of luck with this,really.please let us know how things are going.marcia

My granddaughter had surgery for something that sounds just like what you are describing. It is called Crianiostenosis ( not sure of the spelling). She was 5 months old when diagonosed and had the surgery when she was 7 months. She is now 19 months old and doing great. The surgery sounds very scary but to the doctors at the children's hospital, it was pretty routine. She had the operation on Tuesday and was home by Saturday. Her pediatrition actually spotted the problem on a routine wellness visit. We love her doctor because if left untreated, she would of had malformation of the head and learning impairments.

One thing I would advise is to take someone with you to see the doctor. A lot of new parents aren't sure if they can question what a doctor tells them, or demand what they want. If you take someone with you it might help give you strength (especially if that person is somewhat pushy and out-spoken!) You are the best advocate your child has. Good luck.
