View Full Version : for those using fibre to help with diarrhea

I had my gall bladder out 10 weeks ago and since then have had diarrhea on and off. My GP put me on Konsyl-D to control my diarrhea. It works well. However, I do sometimes have bloating, gas and bouts of diarrhea.

I am taking 1 rounded teaspoon in a glass of water first thing before breakfast and again before dinner at night.

I find that I do not have a BM every day, on the days I do have one it is sometimes just round pebbles joined together (not hard) and I always feel like it's not enough. (prior to gall bladder removal I would have a BM that resembled a sausage and a decent size). Other days it can be long and stringy and smell awful.

Rently I have found that I may have a BM every 2nd or 3rd day and then I will feel urgency and end up having what seems like a LOT of BM....like a clean-out. I know that if I was not taking fibre this would be horrid diarrhea because even though it is thicker it is kind of urgent.

I'm sorry this is too much information, but I am wondering if this is normal while taking fibre? It all seems very strange having to think about what my bowels are doing.

I would appreciate any advice I can get. I did wonder about increasing the fibre to see if I can have a BM each day, but I am unsure about this.

Your post sounds familiar. I started taking 1 rounded teaspoon of fibre every morning 2 years ago, and it has cut down on the diarrhea. But the urgency is still there. Sometimes I won't go at all for 2 or 3 days, then I'll have a normal BM, then later the same day I will have urgent, loose stools.

Hi Georgette,

Isn't it annoying!
Have you tried increasing the amount of fibre per day to see what happens?

what fibre product are you taking? I guess each product has it's own recommended dose. Mine is Konsyl-D which says that 1teaspoon equates to 3.4g of Psyllium. so I am getting 5.4g fibre per day. I wonder if this is enough?

BTW; have you had your gall bladder out or is yours IBS?

Hi Auxano,

I still have my gallbladder, and I have been told that I have IBS for lack of a better explanation. I'm still not happy with that diagnosis for several reasons. I truly believe there is something more to my problems.

I take one teaspoon of Metamucil smooth texture every morning. I have thought about taking one in the evening as well but I haven't gotten around to trying it yet.
