Hi there :)

I've was dx as diabetic close to a year ago and my most recent lab work showed that I have macroalbuminuria (kidney protein in the urine). My doc said my kidneys show signs of early damage and I'm seeing a specialist this week. I'm writing in the hopes of finding more info on this and see if anyone else has run into this complication. I'm very nervous and scared right now and want to learn all I can.

Thanks in advance,

I meant to say microalbuminuria, not macro.

I am sorry to say that kidneys do not regenerate, so if you have the beginnings of damage, your kidneys will stay that way. The good news is that if you take care of yourself well, it may be decades before you ever need any intervention because of the kidney problems.

I was first diagnosed with protein in my urine in 1979. I did not go on dialysis until 2001. Back in those days there weren't any sorts of meds to give to help slow the damage either.

So best of luck to you.

Btw, it isn't "kidney protein" in your urine. It is protein that has leaked out of through the kidney because the kidney was not functioning well enough to hold it in.

Take care.

You are right about the protein. I had worded it wrong :)

Well, I'm seeing a nephrologist this week and will take it from there. I know the key is taking the best possible care of myself that I can so that is my priority. My dad and one sister also have diabetes, and my sister is in the end renal stage unfortunately so that adds a bit of panic to my situation too.
