View Full Version : Growth/bump on vocal cord?

If anyone could please respond, my fiance and I would very much appreciate it!

My fiance has been having the feeling of something being stuck in the back of his throat for about three weeks now. It was worrying him enough that he finally made an appointment with an ENT specialist and was lucky enough to get in today. The doctor did a scope and found a red growth/bump (the doctor didn't actually describe its shape or anything to him) on his vocal cord. He does suffer from bad acid reflux; in fact for a while it was giving him chest pains and he was afraid he was having heart problems. All tests came back normal and he was told that it's acid reflux. The doctor he saw today said that it *could* be caused by that and to double his Prilosec doseage for 6 weeks and then if it's still bothering him at that time to come back in and they'd do a biopsy. (Of course that's got us scared.)

We also do have (low-risk) HPV, *but* we never have oral sex. He mentioned the HPV to the doctor, but failed to mention that we don't have oral sex, and so the doctor said it could be from that too. I wish he would have mentioned that, but he didn't, so I dunno how likely it is that that could be from HPV. We've also read about polyps and nodules that can form on the vocal cords from "abusing your voice."

I guess we're just wanting some feedback from someone...or more than one someone... to let us know if anyone out there has experienced something similar and it turned out to be okay? Or even if it wasn't okay? Of course everyone's trying to reassure us and telling us that the doctor would have KNOWN by looking whether he thought it was something urgent enough that it needed to be biopsied right away or not. We think it's a little odd that the doctor would tell him to wait 6 weeks if it was something that could possibly be cancerous?

Anyway... any replies would be appreciated!! Oh, I should also mention that he's only 23 (almost 24) years old and as far as smoking goes, he's only smoked for a total of about 2 years in high school.

Well, I don't have any experience myself, except the anxiety that I have throat cancer due to smoking.

However, in all the posts here and elsewhere I have seen, that you should pressure your doc and, if necessary, change your doc.

(I'm not so happy with my doc either. With my current sore throat he just gave me something to suppress the symptoms, after having a cursory look at my throat and two questions.)

I'm 24 and have the same problem. I also contracted HPV a while back, so I'm guessing it might be related to that. However, I have smoked for 7 years. Hopefully it's not related to that, because that would probably be quite serious. Please post any updates as I'm curious to hear what your experience is. I've got no info on my case...ENT appointment is for next week.

I'm also beginning to think it might be related to drinking. I've become quite a scotch fan in the past 4 months. If this problem can be caused by acid reflux, I'm assuming it can also be caused by the food and drink you consume.

Best.
