What are some of the meds some of you are taking for OCD? What has worked best for you? Just wanted to take a survey since I see my doctor today. Thanks

The standard is Luvox and a Benzo of some sort. However, many combos of different drugs may have to be tried before you find something that works. Personally I just take the Benzo because I have bad reactions to all the antidepressants and I am not depressed. This can be an arduous journey, so prepare to have some extra anxiety and keep a log book of how you felt every day and when you felt that way so you and your doctor can see your progress.

Good luck,
OE

There are a list of various anxiety disorder medications, but the effect of most of these put me into suicidal depression. Each person is different when it comes to meds. What may work for me might not work for you.

Your first med usually works the best for the longest also, but that may be my OCD talking?

Iloveturtles,

There are lots of meds out there and plenty of options your psychiatrist has at his disposal.

Most docs use antidepressants to treat OCD. I'm bipolar, so my dosage is carefully monitored because an antidepressant can trigger mania. I take Zoloft. It has worked best for me for many years.

But like someone else said on this thread, each person responds differently to different meds. Your doctor will consider your side effects, as well as how well the med seems to be working. Be open. Always let the doc know just how you're feeling. That way, you get the best med possible for you.

Best wishes,

Nikki

Ten to 20% of the population suffers from undiagnosed pyroluria. Symptoms run the gamut from pale skin that burns easily to schizophrenia. In our family we have someone that's depressed with anxiety, someone with mild delusional paranoia, and someone with OCD. All have been helped with B6 and zinc. It may not be your particular ailment, but it is the condition responsible for psychic pain in some.

Yes I've heard about the pyroluria link. Do you mind if I ask how much zinc and B6 you take? And whether, and if so how, you can be tested for pyroluria? Is it a blood test or a urine test or neither?

Thanks.

Never heard of such a thing. Tell me more.

Okay - I'll tell you what I know. Actually this is information gathered from Patrick Holford's Book, The Optimum Nutrition Bible.

Apparently some people make too much kryptopyrroles (a substance found in the urine). THis substance robs the body of zinc and B6, creating a deficiency. The condition - called pyroluria, is apparently found in about 10 per cent of the general population and 50 per cent of those with mental illness. A period of stress, which depletes zinc, can tip a person with this biochemical tendency over the edge - resulting in symptoms such as depression, confusion, disturbed thinking and social withdrawal.

Pyoluria can be detected with a urine test and corrected by improved nutrition together with supplements of zinc and B6.

I've always heard about pyroluria associated with schizophrenia more than OCD but I guess checking these things doesn't hurt. An indication of low zinc is white spots in the fingernails and stretch marks.

Pfeiffer wrote a lot about the mental illness/zinc connection. You might want to research some of his stuff if you want to know more.

Okay this is getting long but I've just turned the page in my Holford book and seen another disorder - Histadelia. This is when people produce too much histamine. They are fast metabolisers and fast thinkers. One of the symptoms of histadelia is 'abnormal fears, compulsions and rituals' which to me sounds like OCD. Histamine excess can be measured by a blood test and corrected by supplementing calcium and methionine.
