Has anybody ever had a steroid injection into the masseter muscles? Has anybody ever been diagnosed with masseteric hypertrophy following wisdom teeth extraction?

I have had trigger point injections of Lidacaine (sp?) and some type of novacaine or muscle relaxant and recently had injections done with Procaine. I wasn't diagnosed with what you have but was told I have an elongated masseter muscle on my left side.

Thanks for responding. Did the injection help your condition? Are your muscle problems a result of injury?

Not really - I did not really see any difference afterwards. Some drs have suggested I try a form of botox (injections) since its used for other neuromuscular conditions such as Parkinsons and Dystonia and although some members have said they have gotten fairly good results from them I kind of feel like they only temporarily address the issue and do not really fix the problem. I'm really not sure what caused my problems b/c of my extensive history which includes a few facial/head traumas as a child, 2 of which required surgery, braces, orthognathic and rhinoplasty surgeries as well as extensive dental work. But my problem did start quite abruptly - literally overnight - as if something snapped and it coincindentally (I assume) occurred a few days after having a cavity in a back tooth filled.

My problems came about right after I had a wisdom tooth pulled..I've never been formally diagnosed with masseteric hypertrophy, however, my cheek/jaw muscles have overdeveloped to an alarming extent since this happened..first just my left, then my right one as well. It basically looks like I just had my wisdom teeth removed...but it never goes away. Are you having pain issues? If it's mainly an appearance thing, personally, I would go with botox. If you go to a search engine and type in "jaw reduction" and "botox" or masseter hypertrophy and botox, you can find some pretty persuasive before and after photos. It mainly seems to be done on asian patients, however, I've seen some photos of caucasions who have overdeveloped muscles due to tmj issues and they look great in the afters. I don't really have any knowledge on the steroid injections though. Good luck.

When did you have your wisdom tooth pulled? Were you put to sleep?

When did you have your wisdom tooth pulled? Were you put to sleep?

I had the tooth pulled on June 1st of last year. I wasn't put to sleep as the tooth was fully erupted, a general dentist just gave me some shots of novocaine. It was quick and easy, I didn't have any problems until about 10 days later. I don't clench or grind my teeth and have never had any jaw problems before this so I'm pretty baffled.
