I am a 29 year old home daycare provider. I am scheduled to have my tonsils out in a couple of weeks. I was wondering how long I should close my daycare. My husband was going to try to take a weeks vacation after the surgery, but his work is now saying he can't take a scheduled vacation that particular week. I have five days scheduled off at this point, do i need more? I also have a 5 year old and 3 year old of my own at home that i will have to take care of. Any idea how long i will need to recooperate. My doctor wasn't much help.

I'd say at least 10 days -- probably 2 weeks. If you read some of the posts regarding recovery here, you'll find that days 8-9 are about the time the horrible ear pain starts for some. No one ever told me about that one, so I kept thinking I'd be recovering soon and that symptom thru me for a loop.
As your scabs start to come off, you can run the risk of bleeding. I didn't have that problem, but some people do.
You'll probably lose your voice and be really tired. Mainly the tiredness for me was waking up several times a nite 'cuz my throat would get dry and I'd need a drink of water.

I would say that you'll probably need two weeks. I took two weeks off from work, and I work in a slower paced place...not chasing kids around. It's not an easy recovery and you'll need all the rest you can get. The more you rest, the better you'll heal. I had issues with bleeding the second week...nothing major, but some people run the risk of bleeding 2+ weeks. Also, if you had someone to help take care of your kids post-op it would be a big help. I couldn't hardly lift my head off the pillow the first few days. Could your husband use family medical leave? I mean, it's not like he's going to the Bahamas during his vacation time...he'll be needed!

I would also say atleast 2 weeks. I had to have someone else care for my daughter for the first week. I was barely coherant, on allot of pain meds around the clock. Heck, I didnt even have my dog here I was in such bad shape. I had it rough, ended up being admitted to the hospital for 2 days on day 6 for severe dehydration. They say not to do anything strenous for atleast 2 weeks post-op. You may start feeling better after 10 days or so as far as your pain level, but you may find that you are just plain pooped. I couldnt even imagine having to care for several children in the state I was. Its not an easy ordeal and you really need the time to recover and heal without over doing it! I am 16 days post-op, have no more pain but my engery level still isnt what it was pre-op. I havent lost my scabs yet either..
