Well, I took the 4 hour Glucose Tolerance test yesterday.. Was terrible. Felt horrible towards the end. Turns out I'm hypoglycaemic. And a pre-Diabetic. I was wondering if someone could give me a little more info, your advice, struggles you have.. I'm new to this and need some help.

I also have high blood pressure and I was wondering if being hypoglycaemic would affect it? Anyway, thanks in advice.

(20 year old, overweight female)

High-blood pressure and diabetes are often-seen companions, to be sure. That is because some of the same modality of cause is responsible for both diseases.

As a 20-year-old, you have many, many good years ahead of you if you will control your diet, get good rest, exercise, and keep your blood sugar levels down.

You say you are "overweight" - if you reduce your weight, you will BOTH lower your blood sugar level and reduce your blood pressure. This is one big struggle for us all. Our bodies "fight" this.... it seems as if they want to maintain the weight they have, and will adapt considerably to your reduction in intake in order to do it. I am sure you have felt this already.

Also, as a twenty-year old, who is pre-diabetic, you may actually be able to avoid "complete diabetes" which is a lifelong battle. At the very least, you should be able to prolong the need for medication, and prolong any of the unfortunate outcomes of these diseases which are heart disease, stroke, blindness, inability to heal, and kidney disease.

The best advice I can give you is to monitor your blood pressure and your blood sugar closely. Get a Hemoglobin A1c test at least every half year, or as your doctor prescribes. The monitoring equipment is inexpensive and easy to use. At your stage, if your diet is "stable" (meaning that it doesn't vary widely from day to day) you probably don't need to finger-stick more than once a week. At this rate, the test-strip costs won't drive you into bankruptcy.

Tfkeel- Thanks so much for responding. I was just really scared when I found out I was on the verge of being a diabetic. And was just looking for some kind words. So thanks!

I've been excersising, but its the diet that is the hardest. My doctor wants me to cut out ALL sugar. Which is what I basicly live on. (Carbs, carbs carbs!) I'm 5'6 and at 234lbs. My dad is a type 1 Diabetic which he struggles with everyday. I really dont want that to happen to me, expecially now. I'm too young for these major health issues.

But thanks again for listening to me ramble. :-)
