View Full Version : 1 month post op tonsillectomy

Should my throat still feel swollen? I had most of my uvula removed at the time of the surgery and that area including the pallet still feels really swollen. Like I have something in the back throat all the time. I even gag when I try to say certain words because I feel like I am being deep throated. Is this normal post op? Will it ever go away? Should I call the Dr?

Mom2Mom,

It wouldn't hurt to talk to your ENT. They know the exact procedure that was preformed. It took 21 - 24 days for all of the scabs to leave me.. however, these were the deeper scabs far down the throat. My actual visible scabs were gone by p.o. day 16. I had issues swallowing for a good month plus, and still have to drink lots of water with my meat and other dry foods. No water, and my drier foods seem to hang out in the holes left behind after my tonsil extraction.

I did not have the UPPP done.. my insurance denied it.. so I can not relate my experience there. My ENT did warn me prior to having to cancel the UPPP that it takes a lot longer to recover from it.. and that some physical therapy is occasionally necessary, because you have to retrain the altered soft pallet to seal off your nasal airways while swallowing.

If swelling is still extreme see if you can get a steriodal dose pack. The steriods will knock out the swelling right away.

Sincerely,
MG

Mom2Mom,

I am still batting around 98%. Those steriods will help immeasurably. Good luck on the rest of you recovery.

Sincerely,
MG
