I am 52 and weight 155. To much I know (I am5 ft.) It's been a month since I started walking. I never walk less than 3 miles a day and try to make 5. This is every day. I eat between 1200 and 1500 calories. I don't eat sweets, never really did. My walks are 3.4 miles per hour down to 3.0 before ending the session. I HAVE NOT LOST 1 POUND. What's the problem. I do have mild emphysema, I don't know if my oxygen level is okay during all this or not. I don't get dizzy or anything so I assume its okay. Can anyone help me out here.
Thanks
Deb

1. How long do your walks take? Are they chalenging at all? When do you do your walks? Do you do any kind of strength training?
2. More info on your diet: how many meals per day and what times? Typically, what foods do you eat? How much water do you drink?

My walks are on a treadmill, I should have mentioned that. They take 50 to 60 minutes averaging a 20 minute mile. I eat three meals a day. Not always at a good time because I work 3 to 9 with no break. So I might have a bowl of cereal when I get home as a meal. I am a waitress so I do not sit around all day doing nothing. I walk 7days a week. Like I said I try to get in 5 miles a day. I have walked as many as 9 miles (two sessions) in one day. I don't drink alot of water. Does any liquid count. I drink mostly coffee and juice (sugar free).I really don't know what else to tell you. I just thought I'd see some weight loss by now. I am losing inches in certain areas but NO weight loss.
Thanks Deb
ps I heard you should take a day off for rest. Is that true???

For just walking you don't really need "recovery" time as you would if you were running or strength training, but occasionally (maybe every couple of weeks) taking a day off can certainly help.
First, if you see yourself losing inches but not losing weight, this is a good sign. It means that you have gained some lean muscle and are losing fat. Even though it is slow going, if you stay consistent, I'd guess soon the scale will start to reflect your progress.
Second, you need to drink more water, less coffee and sugar-free (artificially sweetened) anything. Coffee dehydrates you, and while dehydrated, your body doesn't function optimally.
And although you didn't really mention what foods you eat (besides cereal) improving the content to as much whole, real food as you can will make a big difference. Oats instead of cereal, grilled or broiled chicken breast instead of deli meat, fresh fruits and veggies... that kind of thing. Even though you seem pretty restricted on your options for meal timing, having better meals may make a world of difference.
Also, does your treadmill have an incline setting? Adding just a 2 or 3% incline will make the walk more challenging and will burn more calories. Just monitor your breathing and if it aggravates your emphysema, then tone it back down.
So just making some small adjustments, I think you'll *see* some real progress. Just note that it's a slow process, but consistency will pay off.
