View Full Version : IBS Or something else?

I'm a male, mid 40's and back in in '02, I had a colonoscopy due to a small amount of blood for a few days and alternating bouts of constipations and diarrhea. The test came back negative, in that nothing other than a small polyp which also came back negative.

For the last couple month, I 've struggled w/ constipation due to meds I was taking for shoulder problems. About 3-4 weeks ago, I had great difficulty passing a BM. The color of my constipation stools have been dark, but not tarry. This one large in diameter and similar to type 2 on the Bristol Scale with mucus on the beginning of the stool.

The following day, my stools were heavily covered in mucus and blood. This has continued since them, I went to the doc and he did an initial exam and indicated that the bleeding was not just at the entrance (I guess ruled out hemorrhoid). He gave me a script for ProtalFoam and suggested I increase fiber and water which I have.

He also scheduled for the colonoscopy, but could not tolerate the prep (HalfLytely) solution. Over the last few week, the amount of gas has seemed to increase (thinking this might be normal w/ the increase in fiber) and I have been getting vague back pain stabbing pains in the lower right abdomen, half way between my right hip bone protrusion and mid-line of my abdomen. Over the last few days, it seems to have traveled to my left side (about the same position) as well. Additionally, I've been dealing w/ nausea and the pain issue seems to get worse as the day goes along.

I'm worried in that from what I have read is that many of the symptoms are those of IBS or possibly UC? Then there is always the concern of the "c" word....

Any help on your symptoms or suggestions on this would be very helpful

I am no DR but that sounds like IBS to me. Proctofoam is great I have used in the past. You need to find out what is triggering the IBS. If its the meds for your shoulder you need to switch or get off them quick. I have not had symptoms like yours since 2000. I know what my trigger foods are and meds. Stress is also a trigger. Getting it under control is very important. Also do not go to heavy with the fiber, just enough is fine, to much will make it worse.
