I feel like I've been in peri for a decade and have suffered every symptom I think there is. I'll be 50 next month. I haven't had a period in 4 months and was very happy to think that the end might be near. However, for the past week I have been feeling very very VERY irritable. Everything, everyone, bothers me. I picked up one of those home test kits that measure FSH levels and took it and did not get the positive result. So.... does that mean that I can expect to get my period (and probably a doozy of one too)??

I have just turned 52 and have been missing periods for the last two years. The first time was for 3 months and I too took an FSH test myself. It was also negative. I then had my periods for a few months and stopped again for about 7 months. To my surprise they returned again and I had them for about four months. That was 10 months ago and I have been period free for 10 months now. I did do another test in between but it was still negative. So I have bothered to do one again, I thought I would leave it until I had missed my periods for one year. :)

hi ladies. i've just read both your posts, and am wondering at the value of taking fsh tests, particularly when you're in your 50's and pretty darned sure that menopause is upon you? if you do get a positive reading, what do you do with the information? does it just tell you that you are menopausal, or does it show something else i should know about?
for myself, i'm 54 and just about 12 months period free (another week to go!), and have never had one of these tests. thanks in advance.

Getting a positive FSH reading just confirms that you are in menopause. I guess for me, if I saw a positive result, I'd be more apt to think that perhaps I will not get another period and all these weird symptoms/feelings will soon go away! (wishful thinking??)

Hi, I am also turning 50 in March and have been period free, so far, for 8 months now. I get the same feelings as if my period will start up at any moment. Twinges, lower back pain, full sore breasts. You name it. On one other site it describes how you can get a phantom period with no actual flow during peri. I get the moodiness and feel testy from time to time too. I can go from having an abundance of energy to a crashing meltdown with no energy at all. It sucks feeling like this.
