hi there and welcome to the board. Just a little advice but you will probably find alot of us here would agree on having an addictive personality and "not wanting to go there again" however you are still in early stages of diagnosis and you do need to talk to your doctor and discuss things with them most meds that are given for bp are not addictive anyhows but they are to be taken long term. take some time to think about your options and remember your health must come first good luck with your journey Debs x

Mood stabilizers are used to treat bipolar disorder. These meds are not addictive. They will help you feel better and help regulate your moods.

yes there has been studys done that show bipolar and addictive personalities run in the same genetic chain and are very closely linked

hence the reason why some people who suffer with alcholism or any other addiction can sometime be misdiagnosed and really suffer with bipolar

my brother has had this problem and it came down to you can only treat one at a time

there is no med for bipolar that you can take one for 7days and tada your fixed it is normally for long term and sometimes for life as mine are

Unfortunately most people do not understand about bipolar disorder unless they have found it necessary to learn by having a diagnosis thrust upon them. There is so much misinformation out there. I would suggest that you learn as much as you can about the disorder and about the various treatments that are currently available, and then pass on the information to your parents.

In your reading you will learn that the longer a person with bipolar disorder goes untreated, the worse the symptoms become. The episodes usually start to get closer together and there is less and less "stable" time between episodes. The illness does not go away as one gets older. Because this is a biochemical disorder of the brain, when it is left untreated, there is a physical deterioration of the brain that you can see in a CT scan. Symptoms that might have been controlled fairly easily near the beginning become much more difficult to treat as time goes on. These are just a few of the reasons why you might want to reconsider refusing to take medications.
