View Full Version : Your Craziest Workout?

Anyone who's exercised for a period of time (let's say over 5 years) knows workout routines can become routine and at times, boring. Most folks know what must be included in a good, overall workout. However, what have you done out of the ordinary, that was difficult, but yet fun due to the challenge and simply out of the ordinary? I remember reading Arnold Schwarzenegger used to pack up his weights, head to the woods with friends and a bunch of food and do set after set concentrating on one bodypart. For example, they would squat or just bench press off and on for about 5-6 hours. John DeFendis, a nationally known bodybuilder used to train in Arizona. I asked him this question and he said one day after his dog died, he was so upset he wanted to take it out on the weights that day. So, he tied his dead dog's leash to the olympic bar and then squatted for 10 minutes with 225 lbs. He did not know how many reps he did but he squatted for 10 minutes! How about the rest of you? What out of the ordinary workouts have you all done?

I am a passionate C2 indoor rower, so for those of you who dislike this piece of equipment because it is often boring doing long distance stuff on it or because the short and hard stuff hurts, then you will understand the following workout as that of someone who has lost the plot a little.

1000m warm up, [2:20-2:30/500m] 15sec break.
10x 100m sprints, [1.20-1:30/500m] 60sec break between sets.
4x 250m sprints, [1:30-1:40/500m] 90sec breaks between sets.
4x 500m sprints, [1:45-2:00/500m] 90sec breaks between sets.
1x 5000m warm down [anytime under 25mins] 600sec cool down.

This 10,000mts workout will leave even the fit guys wondering what planet you are on, but the results are amazing, very good all over body workout and a serious CV workout not to mention getting the body to deal with pain thresholds more effectively.

Other crazy workouts are along the lines of:-

5000m at a pace of 2:30/500m followed on with no break of 5000m at 2:00/500m followed on with no break of 5x 100m sprints with 60 sec breaks followed on by 1x 500m at a warm down pace of 2:30/500m followed on after a 120sec break with 1x 4000m at a real and well needed warm down pace with a 500m sprint finish. Now that one needs a partner but it gives you a good workout also.

My mentality to the C2 is based on the fact that I do take part in Indoor Rowing Competitions and have a good world ranking for my age of 43 in all the major distance right up to the Marathon which is a 3 hour slog to cover 42,195mts.

My best friend and I run for 45 mins, do an hour of squats/lunges an hour of abs/glutes and 30 mins on arms at the gym. Then we go for a 30 min bike ride. We do this daily. Then on weekends we go to a park nearby that has a waterful and we climb it barefoot (it's about 30-40 ft)the ice cold water helps the sore muscles!!

Is it just me, or does Lily Blue's workout seems a tad bit obsessive? I could see if this was the craziest workout ever, but this is done every day by the sounds of it.

I am not saying this to be rude, just to make a comment for all of the people out there who may be "obsessive exercisers", read this and think that working out for 3 + hours every day is normal.

Meadow, yes it does seem to obsessive, please understand I was not trying to suggest it as a regimen to anyone else. I suffer from MS and am most thankful I have the energy and stamina to workout at all. Obviously what works well for 1 isn't best for all.

Lily I'm amazed by your workout, especially considering you have MS. One question-- how do you have time to do it every day? I always feel like there aren't enough hours in the day, and it seems that my exercise routine (or lack thereof) is the first to suffer.

I break it up and do some in the morning and some in the evening. I realize people work, I do and I have kids so I try and devote as much time to it as I can.

I enjoy reading about these type of crazy workouts. Although I've never rowed, it is inspiring to read about what others are doing and accomplishing. I've always been fascinated with what the human body is capable of accomplishing once the mind gives it permission to try. One of my most effective workouts was a three hour arm workout; used just an olympic bar with lots of various weights stacked around, and went to failure on each set, after performing each rep of each set super slow...man, did that hurt and were my arms sore but I've never felt them so pumped up. Let's hear more wild workouts!
