I was at a Superbowl party last night and made the comment that I've been do everything to a "t' to lose weight (staying at 1400 cal, water exercise etc.) and that the scale hasnt' budged in 6 months. The girl next to me (very thin btw) said "oh you need to cut your calories in 1/2 to 700 per day in order to lose weight. (I'm 125lbs and not overweight but would like to still lose a few lbs.) I told her that that is not healthy for your body and she was adamate (sp) that 700 calories was a safe amount to consume a day. I wanted to call her an idiot but I had just met her and that would not be nice. Yes she was very thin but how healthy could she be only having that many calories a day? She said that she wouldn't eat at all today (monday) because of the drinks/snacks she had that night. I am sad because if she were to talk to someone else who didn't know better they may take her advice and end up anorexic. Ughhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Some people really don't know better when it comes to dieting! Hopefully, we'll assume the girl was just an airhead and doesn't know a thing about nutrition. Either that, or she's got an eating disroder herself. But most people with EDs know that what they are doing is not normal and would never advise someone else to live that way. I speak as someone who has been recovered from anorexia for 4-5 years now.
Sorry about your ruined Superbowl party. Please do keep dieting and exercising the right way.

The only people I have heard of eating a very low amount are people who got gastic bypass surgery and CAN'T eat large amounts. 700 is definitely low! I also weigh 125 and just want to get into a little better shape and weigh what I should.. I have been told that 1200 is the lowest that I should go to for my size.. and for people who are build larger should have 1500 or so (when trying to lose weight).
If anything, you can drop your calories to 1200, but 700?? No way!! Or just try out a new workout or something like that.. maybe your body has just gotten used to everything you are doing now and needs a "shock."

my g/f has about 700/800 calories daily, I was worried about her but so for so good? she weighs I think?...115lbs at 5'8, she exercise everyday and when she is off on a trip she exercises even in a Motel room. but I had mention her eating low cal back about 6 months ago or so on this board , she did up her calorie intake to 1200 but she went back down after she gained?
so I just don't know what to tell her?? she is not sick..not yet anyway thats what I been telling her she will get sick..she don't believe me for some reason? she eats a lot of ''pieses'' fruits I notice and drinks a lot of water.

That's what you get for sitting next to a ballerina/model.:jester:
Of course, these silly bone thin creatures fit into a size zero dress for awhile...but almost all come to regret the dangerous choice of 700 calories for an extended period of time. But of course, if someone is paying you $2,000 an hoir for a photo shoot, it might be worth it.
Reminds me of the blonde model who threw a temper tantrum. She completely lost control, broke down and ate an entire COOKIE!:D

[QUOTE=beanerz777;2782176]I (I'm 125lbs and not overweight but would like to still lose a few lbs.)
How tall are you? Height makes a big difference in caloric intake. Try lowering your calories to 1200 or even 1000, I guarantee you'll see a boost. But no lower than that!

I am only 5 ft. I think that maybe it is just turning into muscle and that's why the scale isn't moving. Although my body fat is at 25% and I would really like to lower it to around 22%. I wonder if that would make a difference. I do notice my clothes fitting better it's just that the scale has remained the same for quite awhile. I'll also try lowering my caloric intake a little except that working out makes me so darn hungry!!

At 5'8" this is VERY thin (115#). Considerably "underweight". If she is exercising every day and eating so low cal I would consider her as borderline ED. Someone else may call me way off base here, but at that weight and still trying so hard at it, it sounds like an obsession! I'm only 5'5" and when I was 115 people said I looked very fraile and sick.
Just my opinion!

I don't think you're off base, I just think different people have different mind sets. I come from a cheerleading/gymnastics background where "normal" was always considered overweight. I'm 5'2" and weighed 105 at high school graduation. I was small, but I wasn't anorexic and I didn't look like I was. Also, I would NEVER have defined myself as skinny. Even at that size I had a big butt and big, muscular legs.
In college cheerleading, eating disorders were fairly common and being on a squad where I was one of 2 (out of 6 girls) to be over 5 feet tall and one of 3 to weigh over 100 pounds was tough. That probably sounds crazy to some people, but to me it was a HUGE deal. I was always the smallest on my high school squad. Then I got to college and I was one of the biggest.
Now being 10 years out of college it's still hard not to think that way. I'm in the normal weight range for my height, (130 lbs) but I think for me it's too much. I think other people who are my size look fine, but I think I need to lose about 15 pounds.
Anyway, sorry for the long post. I know nothing about the girl at the party, but I suspect she comes from a similar background, and struggles with the same kind of thoughts.

I agree with twiceblessed...115 at 5'8" and eating 700/800 calories per day is at least borderline ED if not a full-blown ED. That is considered the low end of normal for my height, and I'm 5'4". Chevyman, if your girlfriend is truly doing this, you should get her at least into therapy once or twice and determine if she has an ED. It sounds to me like she might. I was diagnosed with anorexia when I was in college, and I definitely consistently ate less than 1000 cal/day.

I agree, 115 at 5'8" sounds VERY thin. And 700-800 calories a day definately sounds like an eating disorder. I've been going to a therapist who says I have an eating disorder. That's my range of calories, sometimes more, sometimes less.

I agree with the others. 5'8 and 115 is VERY underweight. 140 (give or take a bit) is what a female who is 5'8 should weigh.
