Has anyone out there had thier tosils taken out with the coblation tecnique? Is the recovery time better than having them taken out with the old method?

I am going in to have my tonsils taken out on thursday(feb 8th):( and i'm kind of nervous about the pain management after surgery. What kind of drugs SHOULD i be asking for, my doc had mentioned that he would give me tylenol w/ codeine and liquid form of vicodin. From what i've read it seems like i should alot more than what he says hes going to give me.

thanks

I feel that I have answered this question.. no telling how many times of late. But repetition is good.

Coablation is the best method out there at the moment, especially when paired with chemical caurterization. In children the recovery time can be less than 7 days. In adults barring complication recovery is milder and tends to be shorter as well (as soon as ten days).

The oldest method slash and stitch has the longest and most painful recovery (up to 21 days in adults).. second technique - electrocaurterization ranks second (approximately 16-18 days increased pain due to the healing of burnt tissue, but less chance of bleeding).. currently the coablation uses a low temperature laser that makes a precision removal of the tonsils, and doesn't burn the localized tissue.. added chemical caurterization decreases the chance of bleeding dramatically.

My son 3.5 yrs old had this method he was barely inconvienenced and had minimal pain issues. I also had this procedure done 4 months after my son at the age of 31. The pain was managable with lydocaine ear drops, ice packs, heating pads for my ears, and liquid lortab. I also had a lydocaine swish and spit the help when the descabbing pain became intense. My worse pain came as a result from getting thrush and not getting treatment until seven days after it had set in. If pain and swelling are too bad look into a steriodal dose pack or for quick relief steriodal shot. All of this is listed in the LisaMP's post in great detail.

Sincerely,
MG

Hi MG,
Yes, you have answered my question previously. I am a nurse and do realize that people's experiences with recovering from the same procedure vary greatly. I have been unable to find someone else who has had the procedure so I thought I would post again. Thanks for your time,
Christy
