Hi all,
My father has been cancer free for 5 years now - had a cancerous kidney taken out 5 years ago. The drs. found it during a hernia operation - my father was so blessed. Now he went in for a routine examination and the nurse asked him if he burped a lot and dad said "yes". Upon further testing, it was discovered that my dad has esophagus cancer - I'm assuming from untreated acid reflux. He sees an oncologist this week, so we don't know what stage it is in yet. Has anyone been through this type of cancer? If so, can you please tell me more about it i.e. treatment, survival rate, etc. My faith in God keeps me positive.

If he was only having problems with burping they may have caught it early enough for some type of surgery intervention. Most people get diagnosed when they can no longer hold food or liquid down caused by a tumor blocking the esophagus. Survival rate for esophageal cancer that has spread is not good. The surgery is usually where they take part of the esophagus out and pull the stomach up into the chest and stitch it back together. Radiation and chemotherapy are also used. Best of luck.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. My dad died of this just a year ago. It's a dreadful cancer and very hard to beat. People have beat it but it's called the "beast".
Has your dad since been staged? What course of treatment are they going to do.
I am guessing he probably has adenocarcinoma. That is what my dad had. He was in Vietnam and what we are finding out is that a lot of vets from Vietnam are dying later in life from soft tissue cancers...very odd huh. My dad did smoke but the adeno cancer is usually caused from Barrett's which is basically from continuous heartburn. My dad ate tums from as long as I could remember and I guess he never mentioned it to the dr.
I am sorry about the dx. I hope he can be one that survives. There aren't many.
I literally researched so much about the disease it's really unreal and can't believe that people really aren't aware of this cancer...very sad...
let me know
