View Full Version : Strep Throat? Please help...

Well, Thursday night my throat started feeling a little sore and by Friday night I was nearly in tears every time I swallowed. It got worse and then on Monday I went to the doctor, who looked at my throat for two seconds and gave me antibiotics. He didn't do a strep test, or any tests for that matter.

I started taking the antibiotics that day, and I've taken them correctly, but my throat just seems to be getting worse. I now have white spots that I didn't have before, I can't eat or drink much of anything. When I do try to eat, whatever it is, it stings my throat and after two bites I'm in tears. I only drink enough water to take Tylenol and the antibiotics. I've lost ten pounds in five days. Talking hurts and it's starting to hurt when I breathe. I can't sleep because I'm in so much pain.

I try to force myself to eat and drink, but it just doesn't work. And as if the painful swallowing and stinging weren't enough, my throat now bleeds whenever I eat.

I've tried all the things my doctor suggested for the pain - throat spray made it worse, gargling with salt water did nothing, throat lozenges made it worse because of all the swallowing, Tylenol only helps with my earache, not my throat. I've tried hot liquids, cold liquids, no help. I've tried various remedies I've found on the internet to no avail.

I look at my throat and the white patches are getting bigger. My tonsils are almost completely covered now, and it seems like that should be getting better since I'm on antibiotics.

I don't know what to do. I don't know if I even have strep throat, since I've had that before, and it was never this bad. I can't remember ever feeling so horrible. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have the option of going to a different doctor? It seems to me that would be a good idea at this point if you can. If not, go back to the same one and tell them everything you have said here. This needs to be looked at again.

This sounds awful, I'm sorry you're suffering this way. I've had strep and so have my boys but we got over it within a few days of taking the antibiotics. You should be feeling better by now. You should see a different doctor today if possible. If you're insured just go to the ER so they can do some labs and consult with your doc and find out what's going on. You may just be resitant to the antibiotic they have you on and may need something else. You certainly shouldn't be getting worse or in this much pain at this point in treatment. Try to see a different doctor today or go to the ER so you can get this taken care of before you wind up with some secondary infection which will cause more problems.

Please get some help!

Take Care,
Tori

Thanks for the responses. I did end up going see another doctor yesterday. She prescribed me steroids to reduce the swelling and also gave me two shots, a steroid and an antibiotic. The swelling went down a lot overnight but it's still really painful to swallow, but now it's more of a burning/stinging type of pain. Which, honestly, seems worse to me. She told me to keep taking the antibiotics I already have so hopefully this will clear up soon.
