View Full Version : Did anybody else have this problem?

Four weeks ago, I found out I'm diabetic. My blood sugar was 348 and I was put on Glucophage 1000mg twice a day. The next week, I saw my regular doctor and was changed to Actosplus Met. Sugars were running about the same. Over the next couple of weeks, they ranged from mid-200s to upper 300s. At the end of the 3rd week, I had my appt with the diabetes specialist in the doctor's office and Glucotrol XL was added in addition to what I was taking. Since then, my blood sugar has no longer been in the 200 range, but has been in the upper 300s to upper 400s. Last night, it was 498 and I was feeling horrible while I was at work and I was sent to our ER and was given a bolus of IV fluids and after 3 1/2 hours, it came down to 304. I have had ketones in my urine from the very beginning...in the heavy range, occasionally moderate.

I called my doctor today and he's going to give me a referral to an endocrinologist. Looks like I'm probably going to be needing insulin at least for a little while to get it down.

Has anyone else here had theirs go up instead of down after starting the oral meds? If so, were you able to go back to the oral meds after awhile? I've been faithful in taking my meds and sticking with the diet the diabetes specialist put me on. It gets so frustrating to be so diligent and not get the results I'm striving for.

How old are you? Are you overweight? Do you have a family history of diabetes?

Quite honestly, those readings make me think type 1. If that's the case, you'll need insulin for more than a little while.

Welcome to the club, btw.

Thanks for welcoming me to the club. Not sure it's a club I'd choose prefer to be in if you know what I mean, lol.;) But I'm glad it's here for those of us who need the support.

I'm 43 and need to lose about 25 lbs to get back to my weight I used to be years ago before having babies. My maternal grandmother had diabetes, I'm pretty sure Type 2, although she died before I ever knew anything about diabetes and my mother doesn't know the answer either. Out of 6 kids and 10 grandkids, the only other person on that side of the family was a cousin...BUT, he had chronic pancreatitis as a teenager when he developed the diabetes. So, I don't really include him with it being hereditary. No history of it on my father's side.

I have recently heard that there are more and more people being diagnosed with T1 in adulthood and I do seem to fit the bill for it instead of T2. It now makes me wonder if my grandmother had T1 and was misdiagnosed because my mother remembers my grandmother's not being well controlled either.

Ask your doctor to do a c-peptide and GAD antibody test on you.

I agree with Blondy you need an antibody test to know for sure.. I was diagnosed last year and at the age of 37 everyone assumed it was T2 even though I was thin and in decent shape. Thank goodness I had a wonderful Dr. who ran every test know to god and man to make sure if it was T1 or T2!! To this day I carry my lab paperwork with me when I go to the Dr. (husband is Military and you never get the same Dr. more than once) to PROVE that I am T1.. I have had Dr.'s tell me I'm wrong, I don't know what I am talking about and I am too old for T1. It just is easier sometimes to hand them the paper and say see... Good luck to you and welcome!!

Yorkie,
I agree with Blondy...make sure they do (if they haven't already) a C-peptide and GAD antibody test. And, if they've done it, ask to have it repeated.

Because you're a bit overweight, they may be assuming this is T2 when it's actually T1. Or, it could be T1.5, which is a slowly occurring type of T1. That's why the C-peptide and GAD antibody test should be repeated after a few months...if it's 1.5, those tests may come back as somewhat normal the first time, but they'll show deterioration after several months.
