Hi everyone

My 5 1/2 month old has been sleeping anywhere from 6-9 hours at night since he was 3 months old. He is a formula baby, unfortunatly I had to quit breastfeeding early due to medication I was on. Suddenly he has been waking up 2-3 times during the night. In the past if he woke up he would cry and I would give him his paci and pat his back and he would fall back to sleep immedietly. Now he wakes and doens't cry, just rolls over and starts playing and cooing. He is all wide awake by the time I realize he is no longer asleep. I try to pat his back and put him back to sleep and it takes up to 10-30 minutes to get him back. I did feed him one night since he started crying and he drank 6 oz. But he doesn't act hungry just playful. He drinks a lot during the day. I just started solilds yesterday but he still woke up 3 times. Any advice on the situation? I don't think he is teething, he shows lots of teething signs but no actual teeth. I work full time and we get up early to got to daycare so I really need my sleep. OF course if it is hunger I will feed him on the overnight, but I am not sure that is the problem. Normally when he is hungry he screams. Thanks

Turn off your baby monitor if he sleeps close enough to your room and go back to sleep. As long as he is in his crib, isn't crying or upset, he should be fine till he's ready to go back to sleep. My ds did the same thing at the same age. I made the mistake of nursing him back to sleep and had to continue doing it for a few months. Now I just go in if he's crying and give him his soother. If he doesn't stop crying I pick him up and try to avoid cuddling in the feeding position. If that doesn't work, I give in and nurse him so we can all go back to sleep...I have to get up to go to work too!!!
One thing suggested here to me was to provide some safe toys for him to play with as well as a few soothers in his bed so he's sure to find one.
Good luck!!!

I think babies go through this phase because they are becoming more aware of their world, and they don't want to miss anything!:D

Someone else just asked something like this on a thread I wrote in on too........My son did this all the time when he was learning to do something new. Likek what Jordan said, leave him if he isn't crying.......he'll get the hang of it.:)

Hi everyone

Thanks for replies. Well I started solids this week. He will be 6 months old next week. We did sweet potatos and he loved it. I didn't think he was ready to eat since he always spit out the rice cereal. The first night of solids he still woke up 2x. The next night he woke up 1x. Last night I put him to bed at 8 and he slept straight through to 5:30. I was so happy! When you have seen your baby sleep 8-9 hour stretches, you can become very spoiled. I know so many people who have never had their baby sleep through the night. So I have been lucky and of course do not want it to end!

I do still sleep in the same room as him. So maybe I should consider moving back to my own room. I know once he can sit up and see me through the crib things will probably get worse.

Thanks for the input.

Hi all

This week has been a nightmare for sleeping. My son has a stuffy nose and has been waking up constantly at night. I am so exhausted. I have had to do a feeding almost every night for the last 4 nights. He then goes right back to sleep for a few hours. But before the feeding he tosses and turns, wakes, plays, babbles and cries. I think he has a nother sinus and possible ear infection. I am so completely tired. I have been functioning on 3-4 hours of sleep a night before going to work. I am worried about the baby always getting sick. But the night waking started when he was feeling just fine. Thanks for listening everyone. . .

Hope2heal, do you put cereal in hte forumula? My kids didnt eat cereal until about 5months then tried the fruits one at a time. I use to put hte cereal in the forumla becuase they spit it out too. But that was just the morning and late after noon bottles. I would put fruit as well in them but they do eat the fruit on their own. I know all to well about geting spoiled with ones that go to sleep through the night then for no reason(not even illness) they stop. I do know that most kids do get up till about 9-12 months for a feeding still at night. Not sure if your little one is going through a growth spurt but maybe he is. You did say he was doing this before he got sick so maybe that is what it might be. Or maybe it was hte makings of him not starting to feel well. I'm not sure what's the matter, just going by what i've been through with the ones i've got. Teeth, illness, growth are the only ones i've seen them get up for at night. I had my one daughter(#3) go through 3months of pain at night and holding her mouth till her teeth came in it was awfull. I hope that isnt going to be your case. I think from what you wrote he is about 6month now. So is my DD(#4), she is great with the sleeping. But #3 dd o boy that what a challange. That was the one where I was pregnant with #4 and #3 was screaming 4 times a night. it was horrible, I got no sleep at all. Peditrician yelled at me and siad let her cry since we knew there was no other reason. Now she sleeps great even through storms;).

Ya know what I"m going to ask my pediatrician about the problem you have with daycare. I'll ask if there is any truth to if they are sick now when will their immune system be better. It's 5:21pm here eastern time. I have a 6:15pm appt. 6month old DD is croupy and not getting better. So when i'm there i'll ask. O this is her 2nd illness and we dont go to daycare. I'll post after I get back.

thanks mama of 4 and everyone else who replied. I am starting to think maybe he was having some ear infection before the symptoms started showing and maybe was why he has been waking.

Also he is now 17 pounds a pound bigger than last time a month ago. Wow!

Yes I do put a little rice in the bottle but don't feel comfortable doing more than a little.

Last 2 nights I gave him tylenol before bed and he slept a little better. Maybe he has been in pain poor thing.

Also I woke him after 2 hours to feed him before I went to bed. That seemed to help a bit too. I am worried that he is not eating much right now due to not being able to breathe through his nose.

I hope he gets better soon and all your little ones stay well and sleep good!

I asked my dr. about this illness all the time. Roughly what she said was Yes in order to become "immune" is to be exposed. 2nd exposer isnt "as" bad BUT the body works to fight it faster. Example; 2nd time around with same exact cold that Granda brought to your house(;) ) lets say...;) ... Ok so now the body knows this particular virus and will attack with it's defense...Like a fever. that is why some kids get a fever for a few hours then it's gone but no other symptoms.... Dr. said that the more they are exposed the less they will be sick later on. As a matter of fact she reminded me that my 1st born was Croupy all the time and even with 3 other kids in the house his immune system is fairly good.

One thing my Dr. wanted to stress was "is your dr. diagnosing an ear infection"? Is it a true infection or just redness?

Dr. also said that and she stressed this, that since baby is in daycare (OR any child with more than kid around it) can get sick with one cold and then before they are completely over it can get another one on top of that one. So your ds6months could be sick today with Virus#1 and get Virus#2 next week. She also said that virus depending on which ones have a period of a few days before they show signs so yes contagion can be there before you even know poor baby is sick. :(

She also said that teething can cause the immune system to be lowered thus the colds that are around are saying "hey this is a great place to go" . We talked for a while can ya tell!;)

my dd6months is doing fine, she has congestion but nothing in her chest. But dr. noticed the eczema flare up on DD2 1/2's face and we talked about that as well. So just a little saline in baby's nose and hopefully she'll be golden soon.

So I do think that eventually Not soon but eventually your baby will have a better immune system. I would deffinately make sure the dr. is right even if you get a 2nd opinion to find out if it's just teeth or not. MIne tugged their ears all the time when teething and never had an infection thank God. Go figure:dizzy: .

Dont be afriad to put the cereal (not thick) in his formula, just make sure your slit is just a little bigger in the nipple. I go through a lot nipples when trying to cut the hole a little bigger but once ya got the right size hole ( i use a knive ) it's so worth it and they dont make a mess when eating. I usually make the morning and late afternoon the formula/cereal/fruit then the rest are just formula. She is just getting to eating a jar in the morning after her palin bottle of milk. Wow she amazes me, she doesnt miss a drop and the rest use to get it everywhere. LOL

I also do the feeding before I go to bed thing so i can get some straight sleep.

Also just a tip as well for when he gets older. There are virus' out there called Rotavirus and RHinavirus or many different others that cause vomiting and diareah. They stink! (stink isnt the word I would use but for forum's sake i will);) Ok my dr's have always told me to keep kids away from dairy products including milk. Only clear liquids with the exception of Coca Cola(yes cola). If you put cola in a cup and take a fork or spoon and mix it up it will become flat and that is what you can give for tummy trouble. THeir poop smells like sour milk becuase of the dairy. And let me tell ya, that virus is gross, everything will be shooting out of every where. Rule of thumb is nothing in mouth after the first throw up for the next several hours except cola or gatorade. NO water because water causes vomiting(i know again go figure). BRAT diet is best (B=Bananas, R=rice, A=applesauce(NO APPLE JUICE THOUGH), T=Toast) for the first few days hten gently add bland chicken and broth you can resume eating if child wants to eat feed them But dont feed dairy for like two weeks. If you keep dairy away it helps, if you start it again it will sour their tummies and make it all icky again. THose kinds of virus' usually take abotu 10-14 days to be fixed.

Just a heads up is all..... O and another thing again, only my 1st goes to 6th grade, the rest stay home and they pick it up from the carts at the grocery store.

Thanks mama4 for consulting with your doc. Yes I am sure its ear infection, since he has been to see the doc many times already, was a preemie so had extra visits in the beginning, then vaccinations, plus sick visits and follow ups from sick visists. ONly 2 x has he said "Yikes" when looking in the ear. Usually he says ears are clear. He also said babies pull their ears anyway when playing/teething. But DS is pulling so much and so frequent, sticking his finger inside his ear and clawing at his face/cheek. HE said the left ear is worse than the right and said it was "definetly infected" I asked could it be wax? He said"definetly not" HE is not the kind of doctor to do the antibiotics over every little thing. He made my DS ride out the first few colds as long as nose was running clear.

I do agree that DS immune system will improve eventually. I teach PRE-K and have for 13 years. I noticed the kids who never went to daycare are always sick and absent and the kids who have been in daycare from day 1 are always there and rarely sick. I have found that to be the case in all of the states I have lived in. Also he was a 36 weeker and was in NICU so maybe that is why is immune system is so bad, he had a bit of a rough start, with jaundice, low blood sugar, respitory distress, feeding difficuties etc. HE lost a whole pound in 5 days. Anyhow, thanks again for the advice. It is good to have other mamas to talk to. . .

That was the same time my daughter stopped sleeping through the night too, I think she hit a growing phase and was up a lot to eat. I ended up sleeping with her and now she is going on one and I still do.
