I am new to all this and am wanting to avoid taking meds (my doc has prescribed Zetia).
When starting a low cholesterol diet what do I need to be paying attention to on food nutrition labels?
Should I stick with foods that have lower colesterol on the nutrition labels? I am now eating low fat ice cream and it says it has 20mg cholesterol per serving as opposed to my old ice cream which showed 30mg per serving.
How about supplements? Is Garlique a good thing to use? What about fish oil?
I read somewhere once that fish oil can actually increase cholesterol levels but my doc told me that's not true.

You might want to post your numbers first. Seems many doctors are cholesterol crazy, and love to give out not needed medication.

You need to watch the sugars. Low fat ice cream still has the same amount of sugar as the non-low fat type. Watching the carbs, sugars, and flours (the white things) should make a difference. Fish oil should probably be taken by everyone, unless that get the fish oil in their diet.

Do sugars cause cholesterol counts to go up? I thought just the transfats and animal fats did.
My friend told me that carbs were ok since they don't effect the cholesterol.
If I had to watch all those things (carbs, sugars, transfats, animal fats, etc...) I wouldn't have much to eat at all.

eternal...The numbers you posted above, are those the last ones or the current ones? You said your TC was 207, and just your LDL was high, at 150. I believe your Trigs were 68???

Those are fairly current numbers. From just 2 months ago. I haven't really changed much since then.

NO trans fats ever.....for anyone. Some will sneak in...but really limit them. there are different kinds of carbs according to a glycemic index. White flours and sugars should be avoided or kept to a minimum.... Don't cut out all the meats, but eat in moderation. There is still plenty of things to eat. JJ, and Lenin and some of the others are better on diet than I am, and probably can give you better guidance in that area.
