Hi, I'm new to this board and have a question - do any of you have an "older" husband? My dh is 45 (15 yrs older than me) and I'm wondering if there are any different health issues I should be aware of or if it might be more challenging ttc than if he were younger? I know this tends to be so for women of this age, but for men too? We recently got married and are on ttc#1 (6dpo).

Hi Penny - I am 37 and my dh is 42. We had been trying 5 months. I have heard it can take longer if either one is older. My dh quit smoking Jan 1 - is on the patch and I made him take a multi vitamin starting this past month while I take folic acid. I think it all depends on the individual and how healthy they are. Make sure he doesn't take hot baths - this was a bad habit of my dh - I made sure he was only in there for max half hour as this can really alter sperm numbers.
Keep in mind there are guys in there 80's still having kids - look at Rod Stewart (61) and Hugh Heffner (80) ! Don't let statistics get you down.

Thanks browneyed,
Do you have any kids, and if so, did it take less than 5 months when you conceived?

Hi Penny,
We are now expecting our first child. I got my BFP last week. We succeeded on our 5th month but it was really our 4th because the month of Dec was shot due to the holidays.
I was intensely surprised - I still can't believe it. It is supposed to take my age group around a year - but I don't believe in statistics as my dh's mom had he and his twin at 40 and my mom had me at 36.
I believe it is how healthy you and dh are and how you time things. Buy an ovulation kit - that's what we did - then you know the exact timing.

Browneyed,
Congratulations - that is such great news! I bet you are on top of the world right now. I can't imagine what it must be like (but hope too one day soon)! Good luck with everything. Did you do anything different this cycle?

We both took vitamins - I took regular ones up until just before O as there is too much vitamin A in them to take during pregnancy and then took just folic acid from that point forward. Dh quit smoking. I drank green tea until just before O. We used the ovulation predictor kit for the first time. And, this may sound silly but after bd - hold your hips up with your hands and keep your feet up in the air (as if you were doing bicycle exercises) for at least a minute or two or raise your hips up with a pillow - and make sure to stay in bed for at lease 1/2 hr. I also took showers instead of baths because I have a tendency to like the water a little hot which is not good if conception takes place.
I found it very frustrating during the 2 ww. It can be quite nerve racking wondering if you have conceived or not. I kinda had an inkling I might be when my temps stayed relatively high and level and I had alot more discharge than normal-but I was blindsided when I got cramps and spotting last week-I thought for sure it was a bust- Meggs on this forum told me she had cramping too which made me more optimistic - and, AF never showed. I can't get in to see my doc until next week but I know I am pregnant from home pregnancy tests.
Hang in there it will happen for you too! Try not to let it stress you too much - everybody kept telling me to relax it will happen for us and it did. I still thank God for my miracle and hope it sticks. I wish you all the luck in the world.
