I an a retired/disabled medical physician who is completing IMRT treatment for PC who wishes to share and advise regarding treatment options. My particular situation is somewhat atypical because of my existing medical condition, but my experience lead me to give something back:
1. READ! READ! READ! Your library or bookseller is a voluminous source of information. I used ny local Barnes and Noble. The internet is another ready source of information but is filled with misinformation and other junk. One question to ask yourself is that is this web page selling anything or otherwise biased. To be fair some commercial sites are very informative.
2. GET A 2ND OPINION!. With the diagnosis you are anxious and want the PC OUT! now, but this cancer is slow growing and you deserve a thoughtful choice. Other doctors may have different (or the same) ideas.
3. EXPERIENCE COUNTS! The more procedures a surgeon has performed, the better for you. This includes the conventional Radical Prostatectomy and the newer robotic operation. Same goes for radiation oncologists. The trend today is freestanding radiology centers including CT, MRI, and now, IMRT. Problem is that long term experience may be lacking. Your chances are better at a large, university affiliated medical center.
4. EAT A GOOD DIET! Before, during and after any procedure consume wholesome foods. What are they? Various information sources have different ideas but there are many foods in common.
5. FOLLOW YOUR CHOSEN DOCTOR'S ADVICE! If he/she says to lose weight, do it.
6. RELAX! I know it's hard, but try. And, say a prayer, but remember God helps those who help themselves.
