hgilmore 02-09-2007, 10:29 AM Has anyone had the Coblation technique tonsillectomy done? Can you tell me if there is less pain and what to expect? Having it done on Monday - 27 years old. THANKS!!! Sponsor mooncandy 02-10-2007, 03:08 PM i had cobolation done on 16th jan and although i cannot say if it hurts less than the other way it is still a painful proceedure. The odd thing is that its a gradual build up of pain that wont reach severity until day 5 post op when the nerves begin to come regain sensation. Its a bad time but wort it in the end. Just do very little drink as much as you can stand. People who have never had it done will tell you to eat ice cream but the truth is on day 5 you probably wont be able to so dont worry too much you wont starve but water is essential as the drier your throat is the worse it feels. Avoid anything that exerts you for at least 3 weeks as this causes pain also and take water and pain meds to bed so that when you wake they are to hand. Suck ice if you can as although it hurts its soothing and sometimes tepid water can be too. Everone is different and some stand pain worse than others but I would say that although cobolation means that you arent hit with immediate pain, i wouldnt say its less painful in the long term. As a medical student I know that with coblation there is a higher risk of post op bleeding however this didnt happen to me so dont worry too much. As soon as you can eat, do as each scrape of the tonsil beds is cleaning all the dead cells away that could cause infection. I am from the UK and unsure what your equivalent of voltarol is. But it is a strong anti inflammatory that disperses in water with a fazt actng agent that kicks in after 15 mins or so this is very beneficial so find out what your MD can replace that with. Also a opiod may be required too. Also remember you are 27 and the tonsils are bigger and deeper routed than a childs so dont expect to be bouncy again after a week, Take as long as you need and take care. I wish you all the best try not to be afraid and remember why youre having it done! No more quinsy! |
